Learning a musical instrument is extremely rewarding, but do you know what kind of instrument you want to learn to play? What you need to do first and foremost is to gather up all the information that you need in order to allow yourself to make an informed decision regarding your playing. Once you have the necessary information and research you can make an informed decision and can try the instrument out for the first time. The first questions that you need to ask yourself when determining whether or not to play the flute or any other acoustic music instrument are as follows -
1- What is the instrument?
The flute is a long, slender and pipe like woodwind musical instrument that does not require a reed in order to be played. There are a number of different sizes of flutes, with the most common flute styles being the piccolo, concert flute, alto flute as well as the bass flute. The concert flute is an excellent flute to learn on so it will likely be the first that you purchase.
2 - What is the history of the instrument?
The flute dates back to around 20,000 years ago with the ice age, as flutes were crafted from bone with holes in them, and used to call birds. They were developed significantly over the years, and now have as many as 15 different holes and 23 different keys.
3 - How do you play the instrument?
The flute is played by blowing across a hole in the side of the instrument near one end, covering holes along the sides with keys or fingers to produce different sounds.
4 - What sound does the instrument make? Do you like it?
When air flows down through the instrument, the sound produced is a clear bellbird like sound, ranging over the span of three octaves from the low C upwards.
5 - What types of music does the instrument play?
The flute is optimal for a wide variety of different music styles including classical music, jazz music, musical theater and much more. Flutes can also be included in chamber music groups, flute choirs, orchestras, jazz ensembles and big bands as well.
6 - How portable is the instrument?
The flute is extremely portable and can be taken just about anywhere.
7 - How you are going to learn - teach yourself or find a teacher?
You can teach yourself either by looking online or purchasing an instructional book or you can find a teacher that will instruct you or make recommendations on how you can instruct yourself.
8 - Are you prepared to practice?
You need to be in good training in order to perform well with the flute. Are you prepared to follow the necessary practice schedule? You should be training daily and putting a lot of work in for the best results.
