Proper Care and Maintenance of a Violin

violin2If you have just received or purchased a violin, and you are worried that you may damage or break your violin accidentally, then the following set of instructions will help you keep your violin looking and playing well.

1 - First and foremost, you need to make sure that you are cleaning your violin on a regular basis.

When you are done playing your violin, you should wipe the violin and the strings off. You should also make sure that you are cleaning beneath the bridge of the instrument as well. When you are cleaning your violin, it is vital that you avoid using alcohol and other substances that were not expressly created to be used with instruments like the violin, the viola and the cello, for example.

2 - Never, ever leave your violin in an area where you cannot directly control the humidity and climate.

This is especially true for when it comes to putting your violin in your car, even when you have it safely stowed away in a case. The temperature and the humidity that a car can easily reach will cause the beautiful wood of your instrument to crack, bend and swell. If you want to maintain the proper level of humidity inside your violin case, it is vital that you purchase and use a humidifier.

3 - Keep your instrument in a moderate environment in order to keep it in good shape.

This means that your violin should be stored in places where constant 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit are maintained. It is also vital that you keep your violin in a constant 50 percent humidity if you want to keep the wood from losing its luster.

4 - If you move from a place with higher temperatures and higher humidity to a place offering lower temperatures or lower humidity, keep in mind that you need to gradually and slowly introduce your violin to these changes.

Your violin is a delicate instrument and it needs to acclimate to changes in climate slowly, otherwise it may sustain damage and warping from the sudden climate change.

5 - Although you can clean your violin yourself for most of the year, at least twice a year you should take your violin to a reputable violin dealer for a thorough cleaning, just in case you are not cleaning your instrument as well as you could.

Proper cleaning is essential for keeping your violin in good shape for many years.

6 - When you are storing your violin for any length of time, you should make sure to keep it away from outside walls, heaters, air conditioners and other elements that may impact the humidity or temperature of the instrument.

Even when stored in a case, your violin can still be susceptible to climate changes and these climate and humidity changes could negatively impact the wellness of your violin.
