Who is Joan Chandos Baez?
Brief Bio:
Joan Chandos Baez was born on January 9 in 1941 in Staten Island, New York. She is an American folk singer and songwriter that is best known for an individual vocal style as well as her three octave vocal range. Many of her songs are topical in nature, reflecting her interest in social issues and political issues. She is well known for a long lasting passion for activism in areas like non violence, civil rights, human rights and the environment. She also gained notoriety for a long lasting relationship with Bob Dylan. She has been performing publicly for nearly 50 years, and has recorded songs in at least eight different languages. Although after the 1960s her music strayed from folk music to encompass numerous other genres, she is still considered to be largely a folk singer.
Although Joan Baez is a songwriter herself, Baez more commonly interprets the work of other singers and songwriters, covering the songs of other performers like Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder among others. In more recent years, she has begun to interpret music from a more diverse collection of songwriters including Ryan Adams, Steve Earle and Natalie Merchant.
Where She is Now:
Joan Baez is still active in music today and appears to have plenty of years left in her musical career. In February of 2007 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She played out the final set on the Acoustic State at the Glastonbury Festival on June 29, 2008, playing to a sold out crowd. She played at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 6, 2008, ending the concert by dancing with a band of African percussionists. In September 2008 she released Day After Tomorrow, her 33rd studio album.
Career Highlights:
Between 1960 and 2008, Joan Baez has released a total of 33 studio albums, and has been included in the production of 17 compilations. She has also released 11 singles throughout the length of her career. In addition to her musical career, Joan Baez has also been active in politics, regularly voicing her opinion regarding civil rights, nonviolence and social change. Her political activism began when she heard a young Martin Luther King Jr. speak regarding similar subjects, and she spent numerous occasions demonstrating and marching with him from that point on.
