Product Description

Fusing traditional Southwestern Native American tribal music and modern beats, Robert Mirabal: Music from a Painted Cave is a fascinating performance. It's a combination that you might question, but Mirabal is such a talented singer-songwriter that not only does he make it work, you could argue he has created a new genre.

The first part of Music from a Painted Cave finds Mirabal, the Mirabal Singers/Dancers, and Rare Tribal Mob in traditional tribal dress, using native instruments and performing tribal dances. A song he heard from his grandmother, "Ee-you-oo," is a paean to children, and "Little Indians" is a lovely folk ballad he wrote in the same vein. Later in the program Mirabal changes his traditional garb for leather pants, and the music becomes more like rock & roll in the energetic "Hope," although the native-drum backbeat is always there. Besides being musically inspired, Music from a Painted Cave is visually stunning: the costumes are beautiful, the staging elaborate, and the choreography gorgeous. --Dana Van Nest

If you want a mystical journey through the Native-American experience, this is it. Robert Mirabal (flute, drums, vocals, dance and narration) and his group (Rare Tribal Mob) excel in this musical and visual extravaganza. Not only is there ultra-hip music, but a wide assortment of Native-American dancers and costumes. Mirabal's wife (Dawn) and four year old daughter (Aspen)are among the featured performers (Aspen steals the show). Mirabal (A Pueblo from Taos, New Mexico) has evolved from being strictly a flute player to become a greatly versatile artist. If you saw Robert in the PBS production of "SPIRIT" and liked what you saw, this takes it a step forward. This DVD puts Robert Mirabal at center stage and lets the spotlight shine. Shine on you crazy diamond!

I first watched "Music from a Painted Cave" about two years ago on PBS. I myself am Cherokee/Blackfoot. After watching this program several times, I was not only moved to tears by the oneness of the "Native American Spirit" which was displayed "Beautifully"(unfortunately in modern society you never really hear about), I also felt a flowing calmness which can't be described. I fully intend to buy other pieces of work by "Robert Mirabal". Tradition is all to often lost. Thanks to Robert Mirabal and many other Native American Artists-All Is "Not" Totally Lost.

May the Spirits of our Ancestors "Protect and Guide" you All.

It is awesome. You and your children, should view the video. It is what we once were, (America) and what we should be (All peoples) . Not the Hollywood version of what life is or should be. It is a reflection of life issues, and family; presented in dance and music. Enjoy.
AWESOME!!!

This DVD is SO wonderful! I have seen Robert Mirabal and the RTM in concert and it is an experience that changed my life.
This DVD is of the PBS special a few years back but it is like being at the concert when you watch it. They put on a GREAT show and Robert tells the stories behind the songs on most of his songs. If you love Native American music with a touch of "rock" in it, you will love this music. The dancers, as well as Robert will show you their culture through this DVD and you will never forget it.
Excelent combination

I work at a music store and have heard a lot of native american music, but this is truly unique. Mirabal has created a well balanced blend of modern music and dance with traditional native american drum and dance. If you like this you should look for Robbie Robbertson and the Red Road Ensemble: "Music for the Native Americans", and Mirabal's earlier work "Warrior Magician".
I have seen Robert Mirabal

I have seen Robert Miabal's " Music from a Painted Cave" on PBS and on Stage. I also own "Sprit". He is the certainly the best Native American Flutist and maybe the best anywhere. He is a great author of music and good to very good signing. I have not yet received the video tape and had almost given up getting it. I have seen the exact version on PBS and therefore can rate it. Ask someone who has lived in New Mexico like myself and let them see him and I'm sure they will agree he is a great entertainer.

Hauntingly beautiful, powerful lyrics, wondeful imagery -- this is a great CD. Robert Mirabal is creating a musical bridge between his Native American culture and mainstream America. Listening to it goes beyond a joyful experience; it is an entry into a whole new world.

I was turned on to Robert Mirabal by my girlfriend and I was glad she did. He is an amazing performer. This DVD is pretty awesome. I love the music, the dance, the drums and the production. I would recommend this DVD to everybody I know. I think we can all learn a little more about Native Americans through Robert's lyrics and stories.
Awesome

I owm the CD and was so taken with the music and Robert Mirabel's "live" performance, I just had to get the DVD. I was not disappointed. Instead I watched this DVD spellbound; lost in a world of music, dance, and colorful Native American legends and history. The performance is absolutely wonderful. Robert Mirabel has a peaceful calm about him which he brings into his music that touches your soul and brings you peace as well as joy. The harmony and beauty, the balance the Native American strives for in his spiritual life is so visible. The costumes and the stage production far out do most stage productions. Robert even treats you to the beauty of Taos, New Mexico. Rock on Robert, well done!!!
Over and over again!

This is one of those DVDs that I just don't get tired of. I've lost count as to the number of times that I've watched it. Robert Mirabal is a world-class musician who knows how to put on a show.

I purchased both a DVD and CD of "Music from a Painted Cave" after having the ULTIMATE pleasure of seeing Robert Mirabal and Rare Tribal Mob perform live. Whether or not you are a fan of Native American music, you will be once you hear this music. It is both uplifting as well as spiritually calming. The combination of Robert's flute, the drum beat and the cello are absolute perfection. All of the pieces are equally enjoyable-those with ties to stories handed down for generations as well as those which Robert has composed as his dreams and hopes for the future. You will want to just keep playing it again and again...trust me. The DVD is visually stunning!
Mirabal is BRILLIANT.

Took me a long time to find this. Saw if originally on Public TV many years ago. Wish he would make a similar one on DVD. Really loved the story telling and music.
The coolest concert I ever saw.

Guitars strum, rattles shake, traditional Native American dancers dance, shamans howl, and beautiful women sing and dance. There is a rock drum set and a native american set. The Native American flute music is really moving. I would recommend this CD for anyone who likes rock or alternative. This music comes from a deep place in Robert Mirabals' soul. I've introduced nearly all my friends to it, and those that don't know about it, soon will.

By far the top Native recording artist in the country! Combine the traditional with other cultures, add a bit of Rock and Roll, throw in Native language with English translation......

Outstanding dancing and singing. Robert Maribal rarely smiles in this video, but in the scene with his daughter his pride and smile are unstopable.....

Watch it, you'll forever be his fan!

I found this music video wonderfully enteraining and educational. So many think the Native Americans (Indians) were either long gone or just drunks and Mirabel showed how strong and wonderful these people really are and that they have a lot to offer everyone if we only would listen. The Nations are strong and there beliefs are as well. More such music should be brought out to the main streem music world...

I liked this quite a bit. However, if you are looking for drums as I was, I would suggest something from David and Steve Gordon. This has documentary to go with the concert which was very good.
