Although the violin can be played simply by plucking the strings with your fingers, the best way to learn how to play the guitar is by using the bow. When you first begin playing the violin, this can appear difficult, and even a bit awkward, but if you are patient and willing to learn and practice it should not be too difficult as time goes on. Making music with your violin and your bow is fun and easy, and is well worth the effort associated with learning how to play.
- 1 - Begin by tightening the bow.
This is done by turning the end screw in a clockwise direction, making sure not to make it too tight. Between the wood and the hair in the center of the bow, you should be able to fit a pencil to determine that the bow is not too tight. Some people use their pinky finger as a gauge, but this is a poor form of measurement because the oils on your skin can damage the delicate hairs on your violin bow.
- 2 - Now you should add rosin to the bow.
If you are working with a brand new bow, it may be ideal to consult your violin teacher or a violin shop employee so that they can do it for you. You should make sure to renew the rosin on your bow every week or so, but this really depends on how often you are practicing. Renewing the rosin begins by tightening the bow as you normally do, and then gliding the rosin fully up and fully down along the bow hairs between one and two times only. You do not want to over rosin the bow, because this will create a scratchy sound if you apply too much rosin to your bow.
- 3 - Now you should hold the bow correctly.
Doing so involves laying your index finger gently along the grip. Your other finders should be placed equidistant from one another along the same edge, placing the pinky on the lower edge.
- 4 - Now you should hold the violin properly.
Do this with your left hand and your chin. Your jaw should be resting on the chin rest of the instrument, just under your ear lobe. You should sit up straight, with the scroll end of the violin point straight out when the violin is being held properly. When you hold the instrument in proper form with your left hand, you should wrap your hand around the violin's neck base, the top of your thumb visible, and your fingers curled and relaxed over the instrument.
- 5 -Place bow against violin strings.
Now you should place the bow halfway between the finger board and the bridge, tilting the bow just slightly toward yourself. This will produce a more professional technique as well as a clearer and louder sound. Pull the bow along the string in as straight a line as you can, and apply as much or as little pressure as you want depending on the sound you are looking to produce.
