Learning to Play the Clarinet
October 4th, 2011 | Acoustic Musical Instruments, clarinet, For Beginners, Playing Tips
The study of the clarinet can begin as soon as age eleven or twelve, which is the age when the second teeth have become well established. A great way to significantly enhance early progress with this instrument is to have prior experience with the basics of music including notation, basic coordination, rhythm and concentration.
In order for a clarinet student to develop good playing habits initially, certain skills are necessary including learning how to shape and to control the mouth muscles, learning where to place the fingers and learning how to place the reed on the mouthpiece. It is greatly recommended that interested students pursue individual, private lessons so that they will get the individual attention that they need in addition to class lessons where they can obtain ensemble experience.
These two different types of learning environments are capable of complementing one another quite ideally. Students should be practicing at a minimum of thirty minutes a day just for individual practice. In the beginning of learning, the best way to handle this practice period is by breaking it up to two or three different periods of fifteen minutes.. Excessive levels of practice that push beyond the mouth muscle's capabilities are more likely to develop bad habits rather than benefit the player in any way.
Investing in a good mouthpiece when you are a beginning player is extremely important. The mouthpieces that are furnished when the instrument is intended for beginners are not typically going to be ideal. Poorly designed mouthpieces and damaged mouthpieces are capable of completely defeating the player's effort to play well.
Students need to learn about the proper keeping and care of their instruments, their reeds and their mouthpieces early on. The mouthpiece and the reed need to be cleaned following every playing session and the clarinet should be swabbed before it is put away in the case.
There are a wide variety of different private study clarinet methods and class clarinet methods that are available for students that are just starting out. Personal preference is going to vary largely in this department. The class and the band methods that are used by most clarinet schools will be compatible for the methods that are designed to suit privacy study almost simultaneously.
Technique basics: Student should know:
- The chromatic fingerings from the low E to high F, including alternative fingerings for a total of 38 notes,
- Good finger movement and position,
- The G clef, ledger lines, accidentals, the major scales and the related tone chords,
- The proper use of the tongue and how to release the tongue to begin the tone,
- All technical aspects that relate to solid rhythmic contexts,
- Not to strike the tongue to the reed, blowing and then releasing instead,
- Both the legato tonguing style and the staccato tonguing style as well.
