Introduction to Woodwind Instruments, pt 1

woodwindWoodwind instruments are musical instruments that produce sound when a player blows air against the opening in or edge of the instrument. This action causes the air to vibrate within a resonator within the instrument. Most commonly when it comes to these instruments, the player is blowing against a thin piece of wood which is called a reed. Most of these instruments are crafted from wood but some can be made from other materials including plastics and metals, such as some flutes and the saxophone for example.

* Single reed instruments use a thin cut piece of plastic or cane called a reed. This piece is held against the aperture of the mouthpiece using a ligature. When the player forces air through the reed and through the mouthpiece, the reed vibrates in order to create the sound. Some of the most widely known single reed instruments include the saxophone and clarinet, for example.

Other examples of single reed instruments are:

- Alboka - Alto clarinet - Alto saxophone - Arghul - Baritone saxophone

The next classification of woodwind instruments is double-reed instruments, which uses two precisely cut pieces of cane that are joined together at the base. The finished reed is inserted into the top of the woodwind instrument, and it vibrates when air is forced between the two pieces of cane that are bound together. There are two different families of double reed woodwind instruments, which are exposed double reed instruments and capped double reed instruments. When it comes to exposed double reed instruments, the reed goes between he player's lips. The most popular instruments that fall into this category are the oboe, the cor anglais or English horn and the Bassoon. Capped double reed instruments on the other hand have a cap that covers up the reed with a hole that the player simply blows through. This family of instruments includes bagpipes, crumb horns and cornamuses. Other instruments that fall beneath this category include:
