Introduction to Stringed Instruments, pt 2

violinIn the last post in this series we started talking about stringed instruments and the different varieties. We listed plucked stringed instruments, and will now talk about instruments that are played by bowing, striking and other methods.

Bowing is a method that is used with some string instruments, including the violin, the viola, the cello, the double bass and the viol. The bow typically consists of a stick with a number of hairs stretched from end to end. Bowing the string of an instrument causes a stick-slip phenomenon, giving the string the necessary level of vibration to create sound.

The third common method of producing sound on stringed instruments is to strike the string with a hammer. The most well known instrument that uses this method is the piano, which is also sometimes regarded as a percussion instrument, because the hammers are controlled mechanically. Another example of a hammered or struck instrument is the hammered dulcimer, where the player is responsible for holding the hammers.

- Berimbau (Brazil)
- Cimbalom (Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania)
- Chapman stick
- Chitarra battente (Italy)
- Clavichord (keyboard instrument)
- Đàn tam thập lục (Vietnam)
- Hammered dulcimer
- Khim (Thailand and Cambodia)
- Piano (keyboard instrument)
- Santur/santoor (Persia, India, Pakistan, Greece)
- Warr guitar
- Yanggeum (Korea)
- Yangqin (China)

There are also other methods of playing stringed instruments, such as with the Aeolian harp which employs a very unique and unusual method of sound production: The strings of the Aeolian harp are excited by the movement of air rather than striking, plucking or bowing.

- Aeolian harp (played by vibrating the strings with air movement)
- Hurdy Gurdy (this is a rotating wheel, similar in effect to a bow)
- Ellen Fullman's Long String Instrument, (the strings are rubbed to produce sound)
