How to Care For Acoustic Instruments

Caring for your acoustic instruments is not difficult, but it does take a little bit of know how if you want to do it right. There are many consequences of improperly caring for your instrument, most of which can be easily and effectively avoided simply by keeping some basic things in mind.

- All acoustic instruments absolutely must be kept in a good, hard case.

Quality hard cases are absolutely the only way that you are going to be able to protect your instruments from scratches, bruises and dings. You should also make use of a thermal case cover if you want to protect your acoustic instrument as much as possible.

- When your acoustic musical instrument is not in use, you should always return it to the case as soon as possible to keep it in the best possible shape.

The case should always be latched close and you should keep it somewhere where there is no source of direct heat such as a stove or a heater as well as no source of cold air, such as an air conditioning unit.

- Latching your instrument case is vital because it keeps your instrument in a temperature situation that is stable and consistent.

Many acoustic instruments have received a serious amount of damage because the case was picked up when it was not latched, and the instrument fell out and sustained a large amount of damage from the fall.

- Hot to Cold and Back Care.

If you absolutely must play your acoustic instrument outside when the weather is cold, and your instrument was previously in a place where the area was warm, then it is vital that you allow your instrument to cool down by taking it outside in its case for thirty minutes before you intend to play so that it can acclimate to the current temperature and humidity so that no warping or damage occurs.

You should leave your instrument closed up in its case for at least 30 minutes when allowing it to acclimate to the current temperature and humidity outside. Then you should open the case ten minutes before you intend to play so that it can acclimate itself fully without any shock.

If you want to give your instrument the most possible time to acclimate to the weather conditions, plan on arriving early to any outdoor gigs. Arriving late and rushing the process can cause a significant amount of damage to your instrument. Showing up early will absolutely minimize the possibility of you injuring your instrument with new weather conditions.

- Owning a high quality acoustic musical instrument requires that you completely and fully understand how to take care of it.

If you follow all of the advice that has been outlined here, then you should be able to play your favorite instrument a lot better and over a longer period of time, allowing it to become a truly valuable asset in your life.
