Pianos are referred to as the mother of all instruments by many people, and they are also one of the most widely played musical instruments in the entire world. Every single aspect of the piano is wonderful, including the tone that it produces, the melodious sound that it is known for, and even its grand appearance as the piano is the largest musical instrument that you can play, hands down. For the music connoisseur, the music that a piano creates is so sweet and pleasant that it makes listening to it worthwhile. Here is some interesting information on the piano that has been enthralling music lovers for generations.

Pianos are musical instruments that are capable of producing percussion music, string music and keyboard music alike. The piano was first invented in Florence Italy by a gentleman named Bartolomeo Christifori. Originally the piano was better known as the Pianoforte, at least in Italy. In the earliest days following its invention, the piano had a total of 85 keys covering 7 different octaves from A0 to A7, but now the modern version of the piano has a total of 88 keys spanning 7 1/3 octaves. One octave on the piano is characterized by five black keys and seven white keys.

There are four different main types of pianos, which are the Concert Grand, the Grand, the Baby Grand and the Upright Piano. Concert Grand pianos are the most classical models of the piano, turning the art of playing the piano into a truly incredible experience. Grand pianos are generally best intended for playing in the home as well as for beginner pianists who are just learning to hone their craft. Baby grand pianos on the other hand are best intended for beginning players and novices alike, as they are much simpler to learn how to play on. Upright pianos are much smaller in size, and are ideal for tight spaces and smaller homes. Different people tend to have unique and different needs, so the availability of different pianos in unique shapes and sizes will help to meet different pianist requirements based on level of experience and personal taste.

Pianos are differentiated based on a number of different factors, including their shape, their size, their colors, the sounds that they are capable of generating, what types of woods and finishes are used in their construction, how they look, what they cost and how reliable they are. Many of today's modern pianists prefer to use digital pianos but the real fun in playing the piano comes with playing the original, traditional acoustic instrument. Acoustic pianos easily cost between $20,000 for a decent baby grand to nearly $400,000 for higher quality concert grands. There are a number of high quality acoustic piano manufacturers and distributors including Steinway & Sons and Bosendorfer, both of which have developed strong reputations through the years.
