Clarinet Guide Part 1

Purchasing a brand new clarinet, regardless of whether it is your first or an attempt to step up to a newer instrument, is a very large decision that involves many different facets that need to be considered. The clarinet family includes a number of different models, including a contra alto model and a bass model. The most popular model of the clarinet, however, is a Bb clarinet. This is the most popular form of the clarinet, and it is utilized for a variety of different styles of music ranging from marching tunes to Mozart, and this type of clarinet is also prominent in swing music, jazz music and Dixieland music as well. The Bb clarinet is useful in solo playing and ensemble music alike, and it can also be an excellent crossover instrument, meaning that people who learn how to play the clarinet can move on to play the saxophone or the flute later on in life.

The ideal clarinet tone is one that is dark, rich and focused, offering a fundamental and pleasant mix both of lower and higher overtones. The absence or presence of overtones is where personal taste really comes into account, but still, a clarinet should always be used to produce a fundamental tone that is both centered and smooth. Clarinets are designed to deliver a fundamental tone.

There are five different, separate parts of the clarinet that are assembled separately and then combined to make up the instrument as a hole. The mouthpiece is the thinner part of the clarinet, followed by the barrel, then the upper joint, then the lower joint, then the bell. Clarinets are most typically divided into three different categories or levels. The first category is for student clarinets, the second is for intermediate level clarinets, and the third and final category is for professional clarinets. Clarinets are most commonly comprised of one of two different materials, either plastic or wood. The type of plastic that is used in clarinets was specifically designed for musical instrument use. The benefit that comes from using this type of plastic relates to forgiving ruggedness that is typical of plastic, while still possessing certain musical characteristics, allowing for it to sound like a wood clarinet would. The majority of clarinets that are crafted from plastic are entry level or student level clarinets.

The wood material that is traditionally used for the composition of clarinets is granadilla wood, and this type of clarinet is preferred by professionals and advanced level students because it offers the unmistakable sound and the unmistakable resonance that only a high quality wood clarinet can produce. The one drawback to a wood clarinet is that it requires a certain level of care and maintenance in order to ensure that it enjoys a long life, and most new students are not disciplined enough to offer this level of care. Offering air moisture is absolutely crucial to maintaining the health of a clarinet crafted from granadilla.
