Choosing the Right Size of Guitar
October 18th, 2011 | Acoustic Musical Instruments, Buyer's Guide, Guitars
When you come to learn how to play the acoustic guitar, you will likely find it is not that difficult. However, before you begin playing this great instrument, you will need to make sure you get yourself a guitar of the proper size.
When you are looking for the right size guitar for you to learn and play on, it is important to get one of a size and weight that are comfortable. If the instrument is awkward or ungainly, then playing will not be enjoyable, it will be difficult. Most guitar shops will be more than happy to let you try out several guitars to find the size that fits you best.
It is a tempting idea to try out an instrument by borrowing one that a friend owns, however that can be a bad idea as there is no guarantee that you will be able to play that instrument as comfortably as they do. All of us are sized differently and there are a wide variety of shapes we can take, and like clothes, you need to find the right fit in your acoustic guitar.
The fit of the guitar is not the only consideration that you need to take into account when you are looking to purchase one for yourself. These factors will help you find the best guitar for you and ensure a comfortable experience when you play, we'll examine the other factors below.
1 - Guitar Weight
Even though they are hollow, because of their size, acoustic guitars can seem heavy and awkward to handle for some people. Make sure that you try on a variety of guitars to see which ones you find most comfortable to hold, and don't forget that you won't just be playing standing up, find a place to sit down while holding the guitar. Remember, that if during the short time that you are holding the guitar now you find it uncomfortable, you'll be holding it a lot longer when you are actually playing, and this can strain your back, neck, and arms.
2 - The Neck
The dimensions of the neck on an acoustic guitar will change from one guitar to the next, and the size and shape of the neck will affect how you play your guitar. You will want to make sure that you find one that fits nicely in your hands, so don't worry about running your hands over it, make sure that you can easily reach each string and that it is wide enough that your hands don't cramp up.
You will also want to make sure that you are not over extending your arms while you are holding it, again, remember that every little issue you notice while testing it out will get worse during a longer play session. So make sure that you go through all the motions and figure out which instrument fits the best in your hands.
