The violin is a bowed, stringed musical instrument with a total of four tuned strings that can be played. The violin consists of a bridge, a peg box, a sound post, a chin rest, a tail piece, a finger board, a bass bar, sound holes and a back piece. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions relating to the violin, and the answers to those questions accordingly.

1 - Who were the greatest violin makers in the history of the instrument?

A - Some of the most well known violin makers include Andrea Amati, Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri, Gasparo da Salò, Jacon Stainer of Absam and Giovanni Maggini.

2 - What instruments are included within the violin family?

A - The violin family of instruments was originally developed in Italy during the seventeenth century. The violin family consists of a number of different acoustic instruments including the violin, the viola, the cello and the bass viol. Among the different members included within this family, the violin is considered to be the king of all musical instruments.

3 - What are the different types of violins?

A - Basically, violins are classified into one of two different categories; electric violins and non-electric or acoustic violins. Acoustic violins are the traditional violins, which are suited best for novices. These violins have the highest tune, and they are considered the smallest among all of the instruments in the violin family. An electric violin on the other hand uses an electronic output signal, and is ideal for more advanced players. Compared to the non electric violin or the acoustic violin, the sound of an electrical violin is certainly much sharper. Violins are also classified according to their era or period, such as the modern violin, the classical violin and the baroque violin.

4 - What are the typical materials that are used in the creation of a traditional violin?

A - The body of the violin can be constructed from a number of different types of wood, including but not limited to maple, cedar, silver oak, spruce, sycamore and others.

5 - Are there different sizes of violins available on the market?

A - Yes, the violin is considered to be one of the most user friendly acoustic musical instruments because these instruments come in a number of different sizes, including full size, and then 1/16 size, 1/10 size, 1/8 size, ¼ size, ½ size, ¾ size and 4/4 size.

6 - How much is a good quality violin going to cost?

A - Violins definitely are available in a wide variety of different price ranges. The price of a violin is going to depend on a number of factors, including the age of the player, the skill level and the reputation of the maker, as well as the utilitarian value of the instrument. Reasonable, good quality violins including their case, their bow and the rosin can generally be purchased for between $100 and $3000 dollars.

Instrument Care:

Make sure that you tighten up your bow before you play. The way that you can achieve this is by turning your instrument's tension screw. You are going to want to avoid allowing the hairs of the bow to become too taut, as the separation between the hair and the bow stick should only always be approximately the width of a pencil.

You should be placing a small amount of rosin on the bow before you play. You can hold the rosin in the left hand and place the hairs of the bow flat against the rosin before slowly running the bow forward and back along the rosin for an even application.

After you play the violin, you are going to want to clean it gently using a soft cloth so that you can remove the rosin build up that the strings have accumulated.

Polish is rarely ever going to be needed. When it is necessary, however, you are only ever going to want to use a commercial grade violin specific polish. Cleaning your violin using water or a furniture polish product could easily damage not only the visual quality of the violin by harming its varnish, but also the tonal quality as well by damaging the acoustics. Using water on a violin may also cause the seams of the violin to open up.

Loosen up the hairs on the bow before you put the bow back in your violin case.

Never store your violin in any place where there is extreme hot, extreme cold or drastic changes in temperature.

If you happen to live in a climate that is particularly dry, then it may be wise to purchase a humidifier that is specifically intended for violins. An excessive level of dryness can actually cause the seams of the violin to crack, allowing the seams to open up.

Humidity and temperature fluctuations can cause stickiness or turning problems in the wood pegs of the violin. If this is experienced, then you may want to buy peg compound, an inexpensive product that will lubricate these pegs while still providing enough friction that they will not slip or turn unnecessarily. When you use this peg compound or peg dope product, make sure that you are using it in a sparing manner because it can build up an unnecessary level of residue over a period of time. For this reason, some violinists avoid using this and other products that can cause unnecessarily build up or residue.

Applying peg compound involves removing a string from the peg, sliding the peg away from the peg box. A small amount of the peg compound should be applied to the peg where it makes contact with the peg box before reinserting the peg again. Any excess compound should be wiped off before you allow the peg to be restrung.

Installing a bridge should is not difficult, but if you have a problem, please email us. The bridge has to be installed for the violin to play correctly. 2. Strings do tend to slip and lose their tune on a new violin because they need to stretch. If this happens, just give it time. The strings just need time to settle in. 3. If the violin pegs keep slipping, try to push the peg in while turning it. If they still dont stay in, peg drops are available at most music stores. They are relatively inexpensive and should help the pegs stay in. 4. If a strand of hair breaks on the bow, take a pair of nail clippers and cut it from the frog (bottom of the bow) or the top of the bow. A few hairs are bound to fall out with play. Remember to rub a little rosin (included) on the bow before playing. This is a great violin to get started with. And at this price it is an unbeatable value.<td></tr></table>

These are the most basic questions about the violin and how it functions, its history and also how this beautiful and melodic instrument is played. Keep reading for some basic information and an introduction to the acoustic violin.

Q: What is a violin?

A: A violin is a bowed and stringed musical instrument with four total tuned strings. The violin's body consists of a bridge, a sound post, a peg box, a chin rest, a finger board, a bass bar, a tail piece, a belly, sound holes and a back.

Q: Who were the greatest creators of violins in the history of the instrument?

A: Some of the most well known and earliest noted makers of violins to date include Andrea Amati, Giuseppe Guarneri, Jacob Stainer of Absam, Gaspardo da Salo, Antonio Stradivari and Giovanni Maggini.

Q: What other instruments fall into the violin family of instruments?

A: The violin instrument family was originally developed in the 17th century in Italy, and it consists of a number of instruments in addition to the standard violin, including the cello, the viola and the bass viol. The violin is considered to be the king of all of the musical instruments among the members of the family of violins.

Q: What types of different violins are there?

A: Violins are capable of being classified into two groups, those that are acoustic and those that are electric. Acoustic violins tend to be considered as the more traditional types of violins and they tend to be suited best when it comes to novice players. They have the highest available tune, and also they are believed to be the smallest in comparison to all of the instruments in this instrument's family. Electric violins on the other hand use electronic signals and are ideal for the violinists that are more advanced and adept at playing. Violins are also capable of being classified based on their era or their period of development, such as the modern type of violin, the baroque violin and also the classical violin for example.

Q: What woods are used to make a violin?

A: The violin body is capable of being made up of as many as four different varieties of wood, including cedar varieties, maple, silver oak and sycamore, and spruce is also sometimes used to create the body of the violin.

Q: What violin sizes are available for purchase?

A: The violin is one of the most user friendly musical instruments as it comes in a myriad of sizes, including 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, ¼, ½, ¾ and 4/4 or full size.

Q: How much will a good violin cost?

A: There are a wide selection of varying price ranges depending on the type of violin, the materials, the size and numerous other factors as well. A reasonable violin with its bow, its case and its rosin will generally cost between $100 dollars and $3000 or so.

With the vast assortment violins to choose from, buying a new instrument can be quite a challenging endeavor. However, this task can be much easier if you do some research ahead of time. The following are some points to remember when buying a new or used violin.

If you are purchasing the violin for your child, it may be more economical to rent instead of buying it outright. This is especially true for smaller children who will outgrow their initial instrument. Violins are available in quarter sizes, from 1/4 to the full adult size of 4/4. The major differences between professional and student violins are the amount of labor that goes into them and the quality of the wood used in construction. Professional violins are hand-carved from the highest-quality woods, hand-varnished, and meticulously set up. Student, or beginner, violins are machine manufactured with average wood, finished with a machine-sprayed lacquer, and set up with far less options, if they are even set up at all.

The wood used in construction determines the sound of the violin. The majority of violins on the market have a spruce top and maple back, neck, and sides. The price difference is usually based on the variation in quality of the wood. This difference can be vast-for good reason. The best wood for a particular violin will be flamed or quilted for beauty, aged over 200 years, and stored for another 20 years or so.

There are also a variety of woods used for the fittings of the violin. Look at the materials used for the tuning pegs, endpins, and chin rest. Ebony is usually the best option for fittings, but boxwood is also used, and some violins may have alloy tailpieces with built-in tuners. You may find different fitting materials on beginner violins, with parts like chin rests commonly being made of plastic.

Be sure to test out your violin before purchasing to determine if it has the right sound for you. Always inspect the setup of the instrument, checking for gaps between the pegs and nut, the set up of the fittings, and the angle of the neck. The violin needs an adjustment if you are unable to press each string down on the fingerboard near the bridge. You should always be able to move freely about the strings when playing your violin.

Once you have selected a violin and invested your hard-earned money in it, make sure you take good care of it. Always store your violin in a when not in use. Keep your violin out of extreme weather conditions such as very hot or cold temperatures or excessive humidity. In dry areas, you may need an instrument humidifier to prevent cracking. When storing your instrument and accessories in the case, make sure to put everything in the correct place to avoid damage when shutting the case. It is recommended that you change the strings every 6 to 12 months and rehair your bow every 6 to 18 months. Of course, these guidelines depend on how frequently you play your violin, so adjust accordingly.

It is still the number one source for all types of violin information, even after all these years. The book is written by Swiss-born Alberto Bachmann, himself a concert violinist and composer. Bachmann also wrote 1906's Le Violon, 1913's Les Grands Violinistes du Passe, and 1914's Gymnastique a l’Usage des Violinistes prior to publishing this book in 1925.

The book covers a vast array of details and can fill out any music lover's library. You can find information on anything from history and origin of the violin to playing style to music theory. These and many other subjects are covered in a very comprehensive manner. Read all at once, it may be rather overwhelming with the information overload, but it is invaluable as a desk reference. This is a great book for anyone who plays the violin, instrument makers, and historians.

Anyone interested in any aspect of the violin will find it here, but for best results, compare with newer works. New research may further illuminate Bachmann's points. Of course, he may also rebuke modern authors who offer their 'certainties' without historical context. The Encyclopedia of the Violin is a very well-written, interesting, and often nostalgic look back at the history of the violin and its musicians. It is easily the largest collection of violin-related information in one place and contains photographs dating back to 1925. Through these rare photos, the reader can get an idea of what the instruments and bows looked like at the time.

The book also includes detailed accounts of how to assemble the instruments themselves. The instructions are easy enough to follow that anyone who is the slightest bit handy will be able to fashion their own violin from scratch. Yet another section is devoted to the discussion of violin playing techniques, such as advising the reader on how to play difficult passages from the violin literature section. You can also find a large list of violinists of the time, with the author's personal insight into each musician's playing style. There is biographical information listed for each of the violinists in the book. One of the greatest violinists ever, Eugene Ysaye, wrote the introduction, capping off this book as a compendium of world-class musicians. Some younger readers may not understand the significance of some of the material and concepts in the book, but they are an excellent historical reference point to compare with modern music theory and technique.

The Encyclopedia of the Violin is so massive and contains so much detailed information that it could easily have been split up into several volumes. The fact that it has not just makes it a more convenient reference. It may be too difficult to lug the book around in your backpack, but it is an excellent resource to have in your music library at home.
