Wind Instruments Guide 101 pt 3

Here is a guide to some of the more common and more interesting wind instruments. Some of these instruments are common place in the United States and others have a decidedly more worldly origin.

Fanfare Trumpet

The fanfare trumpet is an instrument that is not like your traditional style of trumpet. This style of trumpet contains neither valves nor slides. The fanfare trumpet, on the other hand, does have a mouthpiece that is removable which makes it pretty unique in comparison to many other types of wind instruments.

Bansuri Flute

The Bansuri flute is a type of transverse flute that comes from India. It comes from the words bans and suri, where bans means bamboo. The Bansuri flute is regarded as one of the oldest musical instruments in existence. The Bansuri flute is made from a single piece of bamboo that has seven holes. All of the half notes, microtones and accidentals are created through the use of a truly unique system for fingering.

The finger holes in this instrument absolutely have to be covered precisely either fully or half by the fingers, but by the phalanxes rather than the fingertips. This method of fingering is also capable of simplifying the playing of Bansuri flutes that are longer. To the western ear, the Bansuri flute can sometimes sound out of tune, but this is because the tuning is not exact to western standards.

Bombard Flute

The bombard flute is a small and double reed flute instrument that is quite similar in nature to the soprano shawm in terms of range, though in length it is significantly shorter.

Cane Flute

The cane flute is made out of a single straight bamboo pipe. The category of cane flutes often contains a number of different flutes including Ney flutes, cane flutes, Kawla flutes, Shakuhachi flutes and any other bamboo flutes that are similar in size and scale.

Irish Flute

The Irish flute is a type of wooden flute that is used in order to play traditional types of Irish music. The Irish flute is made specifically to play traditional music from Ireland. Modern Irish flutes very rarely have any keys, if any keys at all, and this is a big difference in comparison to the traditional flutes which had between 5 and 10 keys in conjunction with a total of six standard open holes.

Medieval Pipe Flute

This flute is quite similar in nature to instruments like the cornamuse and the rauschpfeif. This pipe possesses a straight bore and its bell possesses an open end. This pipe sounds much softer than its cousins. The primary art in playing an instrument like this comes from being able to maintain a strong pressure of breathing so that you can keep the instrument's reed vibrating while keeping the instrument in proper tune.

The trumpet has proven itself to be one of the most ancient of all musical instruments that is still being played today. Many clear depictions of the trumpet instrument have survived in paintings from Egypt, and there are two trumpets that were found in Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt that date back to at least 1350 BC if not earlier. One of these trumpets is made from silver and the other is a combination between gold and brass. There are many different examples of roman trumpets as well as Greek trumpets, which like the instruments found in Egypt were made using a single straight conical tube that flared to a bell at the end.

Trumpet Pitch

At the fifteenth century's beginning, instrument makers were just beginning to experiment with the idea of bending the trumpet instrument. By creating an S shape out of the instrument, they found that the instrument suddenly became significantly more manageable without compromising the quality of the sound in any way. Surprisingly, the first ever slide trumpet was actually invented somewhere around the 1400s. This offered an elongated mouth piece section that slid along the inside of the main length of tubing, allowing the player to alter the length of the tubing, and as a result, alter the pitch sound as well.

All instruments have been reliant on the harmonic series in order to allow for them to play in tune. The brass family of instruments happens to rely on the harmonic series more seriously than most other instruments. During this period, the trumpet was a continuous tube that did not possess any finger holes or any keys. The only pitches that were available to the trumpet at the time were those that the harmonic series offered. The distance between the pitches is much larger at the lower end of the harmonic series. It is only when you reach the eighth partial that the movement is capable of being achieved by step.

By the middle of the 16th century, the trumpet was capable of playing up to the 13th partial rather than the 8th. This means that a half scale was available, and this high register took the clarion name after the small and high trumpet that had the same name at the time.

Design and Development

During the 16th century, the trumpet instrument found itself being revered among all other instruments and many royal courts at the time were employing as many as 20 trumpeters at a time. The aesthetics of the trumpet received a considerable amount of attention during this time, though this is not a surprise considering the royal status that the instrument received during this period of time. The S shaped trumpet's mouth piece section underwent a design change so that the mouthpiece section was brought to be alongside the bell section. This created the familiar elongated spiral. The parallel lengths of the tube were then bound together in order to create strength, and ornaments like colored tassels were often added as well.

From the long mouthpieces that the slide trumpet was known for, developed the idea of creating a separate mouthpiece for natural trumpets. The basic design for the mouthpiece during the 16th century and the 17th century was a cupped shape that had a sharp edge and a flat rim. There were different mouthpiece designs that were being used at this time depending on what the purpose behind the instrument was. For example, higher registered had shallower cups for mouth pieces and lower registered instruments had deeper cups for their mouth pieces.

By the time the first half of the 17th century rolled around, it was much more common for trumpet players to play as high as the 20th partial, and many were even capable of ascending beyond this point to the 24th partial or even higher as needed. What this did, is gave composers a diatonic scale, allowing them to use an entire octave and a half in the process, and this was more than enough to allow them to use the trumpet as if it were a melodic instrument for the first time.

The mid eighteenth century seemed to serve as a golden age for the development and playing of the trumpet. The trumpet had only been capable of playing its fundamental key and the keys closest to it up until this point. Consequently, players were needing to consistently switch from one trumpet to another in order to get the range of sound that they were looking for. Designs for a trumpet with keys began to appear near the end of the 18th century, allowing one hand free to hold the instrument while the others played between four and six keys.

The biggest revolution in the making of trumpets did not actually come until the 1820s, as this is when the valves were added to the trumpet. The development of valve mechanisms between 1810 and 1820 had opened up a great possibility for creating genuinely chromatic brass instruments that would be capable of maintaining their control over tone color without losing the integrity of the range. In the 1820s, the first valve trumpets were beginning to appear, and it did not take long before composers were picking them up and trying to work them into their compositions.

Initially, the valve trumpet found itself being pitched in F. The length of this particular instrument meant that any works requiring the use of agility were going to be incredibly demanding in terms of technicality. Alongside the trumpet, another instrument was being developed, known as the cornet. The cornet was pitched a little bit higher, at B, and it was much more capable of coping with trickier types of music. Even so, the first B-flat trumpets did not begin to appear until the 1850s, and they were not actually accepted as being standard until the 1870s.

There are some truly wonderful images out there of trumpets and what they are capable of in film, in print, advertising and so on and so forth. In film, we often see kings and queens as they arrive with the accompaniment of trumpets. The trumpet was once an instrument of purely royal proclamation, but it has grown and evolved since then. Today, the modern acoustic trumpet can be found in many places including rock bands, jazz bands, classical orchestras and many other programs and groups. If you are looking to purchase a brand new trumpet, then you are likely making a grand investment that is well worthwhile. But how do you know how to choose the right trumpet if you are not accustomed to shopping for trumpets?

**- * The Key to Choosing the Right Trumpet**

There are a number of different types of trumpets and they are most commonly distinguished based on their keys. The most common type of trumpet that you are going to see is the B flat trumpet. This is the type of trumpet that is generally used in brass bands and jazz concerts, rock bands and ensembles. The C trumpet is the type of trumpet that is most commonly used for orchestral purposes. Before the B flat trumpet managed to become popular, the most common types of trumpets were the D trumpet and the F trumpet. There are numerous other types of trumpets as well including the E trumpet, the E flat trumpet and the G trumpet but these are rarely if ever used today. The final type of trumpet for your consideration is known as the piccolo trumpet, and this is a small trumpet that is a full octave higher in key than the standard B flat type of trumpet.

**- * Choosing Based on Range of Experience**

The other thing that your trumped buying is going to depend on is how much experience you have when it comes to playing as a trumpet musician. Some stores are specifically going to categorize all of their instruments into categories based on trumpets suited for beginner players, trumpets suited for intermediate players and trumpets suited for professional players. The more advanced models are naturally going to have more features built in. If you are just learning how to play for the first time when it comes to the trumped, then you should definitely buy a beginning trumpet model. After gaining several years worth of experience you can shift to better models that fit your needs more fluidly.

Choosing the right trumpet is vitally important to your success at playing this unique and interesting instrument. The more you work to choose the right instrument for your playing style and experience, the better the results will be without a doubt. The trumpet is well worth learning how to play, if you can find the instrument that you feel comfortable with.
