The ten different voices of the saxophone are:

Two of the most popularly followed saxophones are the alto saxophone and the tenor saxophone. The next two most popular saxophone families are the soprano saxophone and the baritone saxophone. Many people would not really be able to determine the difference between the alto saxophone and the tenor saxophone just by looking at the two of them from a distance, but there is a very large difference between the two. Many people regard the alto saxophone as a girl's saxophone, and the tenor saxophone as the boy's saxophone, which makes sense if you consider the size difference between the two instruments. A tenor saxophone in its original case tends to be heavy to contend with, making it difficult for young saxophone players to deal with, especially females. The alto sax is smaller, making it a better choice for beginner players and younger players alike.

The difference between the soprano saxophone and the baritone saxophone, first and foremost is that the soprano has a much higher voice. In fact, the baritone has the lowest voice of the four compared here, followed by tenor, then alto, and finally soprano. The soprano saxophone is smaller and lighter, requiring less air support. Unfortunately, for the beginner the soprano saxophone can be hard to get used to, especially when attempting to play in higher registers.

When choosing a saxophone to play, it may be wise to buy a cheap instrument so that you can get the hang of it before you put a larger investment into the music. Because it will take a year or two of practice and instruction to get the hang of this new instrument, investing in an expensive saxophone is pointless until you have improved your capabilities with the instrument. The saxophone itself is not the most important part of your set up anyway, as the reed and the mouthpiece are the most important considerations to make when making music. As long as you have a working saxophone, it does not need to be an expensive one to produce beautiful melodic music.

The saxophone is an intriguing and exciting musical instrument that can produce beautiful music once you learn how to play it effectively. Keep in mind that this is a challenging instrument to learn, and it will take you a year or two to really get the hang of it. Don't give up, just exercise patience and practice as often as you can for the best results.

It has long been said that when Sax designed the saxophone, he did so intending to create an instrument that would sound similar to an oboe or a clarinet, and that could also match the volume capable of being produced by the brass section in a typical military band. There was a great deal of competition between the Sax's military band and traditional military bands sans saxophones. The Parisians that judged the competition decided that Sax's band was the clear winner.

Since this point, the saxophone has been a well valued member of the typical military band as well as the wind ensemble. This instrument, the saxophone has also found a way into jazz music and big band music as well. It is from big band and jazz music that people became more aware of the saxophone instrument.

The saxophone, even today, is still struggling to be accepted fully into the genre of classical music. There are a number of composers that have included it in their symphony orchestras, including Berlioz, Bizet, Puccini and Ravel, and even though many composers have even written music expressly to suit the saxophone, including Creston, Glazunov and Heiden, the saxophone is sadly still not as common as part of an orchestra as many other instruments including the clarinet and the violin.

The saxophone is a relatively new instrument, which is one possibility for why this is. New things definitely take some time before they are accepted fully. Because the saxophone first saw use in Military band applications, many composers have doubted the dynamic range of the instrument, instead viewing it as an instrument intended to make noise. The saxophone is becoming increasingly useful in music, however, especially in popular culture and where jazz and big band music is concerned.

The saxophone is a stunning and glorious instrument that is capable of playing whisper soft just as easily as deafeningly loud. The tone is capable of conveying and mimicking emotions. Long connected phrases are capable of being played beautifully using this advanced instrument just as easily as the instrument can play pizzicato. 1 - First you should clean your mouthpiece.

This is done by first removing the reed and the ligature, and then using a mouthpiece brush to remove any foreign material that you find inside the mouthpiece of your instrument. You should put your mouthpiece in a sink and run lukewarm water through it, then use a lint-free cloth to dry the mouthpiece and remove any excess particles with a few passes of the cloth through the mouthpiece.

2 - Next you are going to want to swab the neck using a brush attachment, which appears as a flexible metal hose with a ball of rags on one end.

Pass this through the larger opening on the neck so that it comes out the narrow side where the cork is attached. Brush the inside out to remove foreign particles or bacteria, then use the swab last. You can also run water through the neck but only if you keep water away from the cork, as this will cause it to become deformed.

3 - Next you are going to want to swab the body using a standard cleaning kit.

There is an attachment that looks like a brush with a cloth on a long string and a weight on the other end. You put the weighted end into the saxophone's bell and turn the saxophone upside down to let the weighted end go completely through the body. You then pull the swab through to clean everything out. If you see a slight green color, do not fret, because it is just a sign of corrosion on the inside of your instrument from rust.

4 - Now check the valve pads and clean them as necessary.

There are a number of them on your saxophone, so this will be a time consuming step for you. Each pad should be visually inspected and searched for tears and wear. If you find a broken pad, replace it. Remove foreign material from the pads as gently as you possibly can.

5 - Tighten any loose screws that you find. Most saxophone screws are the flat head variety.

Make sure not to over torque them if you want to keep your saxophone in good condition.

6 - Finally you should swab the corks and grease them as necessary.

Dry the corks completely and add only a small amount of cork grease as necessary. The cork should be conditioned with the grease on a weekly basis in order to maintain a truly impressive seal.

There was another player that managed to bring about a rather neglected saxophone family member to the forefront, and this was Cecil Payne. Thanks to Cecil Payne, the baritone saxophone has now been widely considered to be one of the most expressive of all instruments that has fallen into the hands of the jazz arsenal. When Cecil Payne was living, he never seemed to receive enough credit for his work other than by his peers, but he still managed to take the most cumbersome saxophone family member, the baritone saxophone, and thrust it firmly into the solo limelight where it still stands proud.

As with many other budding reed instrument players, the biggest influence on Payne was Lester Young, who had a softly swinging and laid back style that moved Payne in his own sax playing, especially following World War II. It was not until the 1950s that Payne finally switched over to the baritone sax, an instrument that was at the very core of Harry Carney's Ellington band.

Payne was born in December of 1922 and he grew up with a multitude of incredible jazz legends including Duke Jordan and Randy Weston as well as a certain legendary drummer known as Max Roach. Upon reaching the age of 13, he heard Lester Young playing on the radio and somehow managed to persuade his family to buy him an alto sax. From this point on, Payne attended nearly every Count Basie and Lester Young gig, memorizing their music and then practicing to the best of his ability. Cecil Payne took the saxophone chair in Max Roach's band when he formed his first in the early part of the 1940s.

Payne's ability to play fluently in high registers and low, and the beautiful tones he created played a major rule in the influence of a myriad of jazz saxophonists.

Saprono Saxophone -

The Soprano Saxophone has the highest pitched key, which is B flat. With its distinctive higher pitch sound, the Soprano saxophone is slowly gaining significant popularity, and can be heard in many types of popular background music, including elevator music. The Soprano saxophone can either be a straight saxophone, resembling a clarinet, or have a curved bell appearing like other types of saxophones.

Alto Saxophone -

This is a medium sized saxophone, and it also happens to be one of the most commonly played types of saxophones as well. This saxophone is particularly popular among school bands, and is also ideal for the beginning saxophone player. The alto saxophone plays in the key of E flat, meaning that it has a higher pitch than the B flat tenor saxophone which is another popular option. The best way to tell these two saxophones apart is by looking to the size of the neck piece. The tenor saxophone has a larger size and a crook in the neck piece, while the alto saxophone has a straighter neck.

Tenor Saxophone -

This is a larger saxophone in comparison to the alto saxophone, and it plays in the key of B flat. The mouthpiece is also larger for this type of saxophone, and the tone holes and rods are longer. This is the type of saxophone which is most commonly used in jazz music, but the next of this type of saxophone is often prone to damage because of its length.

Baritone Saxophone -

This is the largest among all of the common types of saxophones, and it requires that a harness be worn by its players because so much weight has to be maintained by the instrument, which rests on a stand on the ground. The Baritone saxophone may or may not have an extension attached to it, making it a low A baritone saxophone. Due to the size and shape that it offers, the baritone is a saxophone that tends to be prone to damage. The baritone saxophone offers a deep bass like sound, making it popular for jazz solos.

Characteristics of a Saxophone Mouthpiece

The saxophone mouthpiece is a piece that is attached to the instrument, and that is quite useful when it comes to producing and shaping the sound that comes from the instrument. The player will blow into the mouthpiece in order to create vibrations which create sound.
