10 - Take the time to learn different barre chords in addition to open chords. You should not skip learning barre chords simply because they are more difficult for you to master. As with the process of developing fingertip calluses, the more that you play and practice, the easier all of this is going to become. Barring chords is going to be nearly entirely dependent on the strength that you have in your fret hand.

11 - Take the time to build up all of the muscles in the fret hand. The way that you can achieve this is by squeezing a tennis ball or some other similar object for a period of five minutes at a time several times a day. Be careful that you do not develop repetitive stress syndrome in the process, however. A couple of times per day should be all that you need until your fret hand becomes stronger.

12 - Do not be afraid to become a little frustrated. It is completely normal and largely inevitable. There are a lot of things that are bound to make you feel a little bit frustrated along the way while you are learning to play the guitar. Simply keep working on it and before you even know it you will be achieving whatever was preventing you before.

13 - Bring your guitar with you anywhere you might be sitting, watching, or waiting on someone or something. Having your guitar with you will give you something to do and will promote your playing ability when starting out. You will also help build fingertip calluses, which are important. Something else you can practice by having your guitar with you all the time is string pressing along with proper chord formation.

14 - Practice, then practice more, and then find time to practice even more. The saying "Practice Makes Perfect" is true when it comes to learning the guitar. When you are practicing you should be striving for high quality, rather than simply practicing in a sloppy manner in order to pass the time. If you practice in a sloppy manner then you are going to end up reinforcing bad habits, making them more permanent.

15 - Play your favorite CDs and play along with your favorite songs. A CD player happens to be an excellent tool for learning music because you can rewind and repeat songs or parts of songs until you can figure out just how to play a specific riff that really interests you. A portable walkman will go a long way in helping you learn how to play the guitar by giving you access to the music that you truly have an interest in learning. This is one of the best ways that you can practice the guitar, and it will give you incentive to keep learning and keep practicing so that you can learn all of your favorite songs.

When it comes to learning how to play the acoustic guitar and its associated cords, there are a myriad of different places that you can turn to in order to get the help you need. Although there may be a myriad of different sites out there that will help you learn how to play the acoustic guitar, not all of them are going to be quite as good as they seem when it comes to properly teaching you how to learn how to play acoustic guitar chords. Below are three basic tips that are going to help you immensely when it comes to learning how to play acoustic guitar chords. If you are serious about learning how to play the acoustic guitar, then you simply cannot waste your time on information resources that are not giving you the best possible way to learn.

Tip #1 - It is definitely going to be worthwhile for you to spend time studying how to play the guitar and how to handle or use the guitar before you really begin actually playing it. Not only is this going to provide you with an opportunity to learn how to play the instrument, but you are also going to learn how the instrument works and how it functions. This will help you to understand how all of the different parts of the instrument work together, and how the sound that it makes is produced. You can spend a half hour or so doing this, and it will pay off immensely in the end because when you finally do pick the instrument up to play it, you will have a new found appreciation for its inner workings.

Tip #2 - It would definitely benefit you to spend some time learning how the sound actually emits from the acoustic guitar when it is being played. What this means is that you should take the time to learn how the string tension is capable of impacting each of the sounds made by the strings, and how the strings and their length and size are capable of changing each of these sounds.

Tip #3 - You also absolutely need to dedicate a certain amount of time every day to learning the acoustic guitar and how all of its different chords can be played. For example, when you are playing a C chord on the acoustic guitar, you can play it in 10 different positions based on how the fret hand is capable of being placed on the guitar. By learning and knowing how each chord can be played differently, you can learn how to transition from one chord to the next more easily, making your hands more flexible in the process.

Learning the acoustic guitar chords is not a difficult process, but it does take time, practice and understanding in order for you to master everything that the acoustic guitar has to offer you.

The History of String Bending and Gauges

String bending is a technique that was founded by blues and country music players who wished to mimic the sound of bottleneck guitars, and later on, pedal steel-string guitars. Since then, bending has become a standard technique in the playing of guitars, because it provides a greater texture to the sound, as well as conveying a bit more emotional dimension. The main factor in how much you can bend guitar strings is in their thickness, otherwise known as gauge. String gauges are given in decimal form that is printed on all packages of strings that you might buy.

Weighing all of the pros and the cons for each of the types of thickness or each type or style of the string is really going to be a matter of your own personal taste. You are going to want to take into account that thin and lighter gauge strings tend to be more pliable and therefore easier on your fingers, they are also much more likely to break over time with your continued use. They are also much more likely to create a much shorter sustain, to have a smaller volume and they can also be troublesome because of the degree to which they are capable of stretching which means that it can be harder to keep them in the right tune in comparison to higher gauged strings.

Thicker strings on the guitar are capable of lending you a much richer and much warmer tone, and they can be tuned down without flopping around in the way that lighter gauged guitar strings might. Some people that play are capable of maintaining that the higher thicknesses are simply sounding better in comparison to the lower quality, thinner strings.

Bending the Guitar Strings

You should be keeping in mind that most of the pushing should be done by moving your wrist upward in order to achieve said change in pitch, and if you want to give more strength to the bend you should be allowing your unfretted fingers to go behind the finger that you are using to bend the string. When you create more strength in your bend you will be able to create a greater level of accuracy in the bend as well. You can also produce the bending in a mechanical fashion with the use of an instrument known as a tremolo arm.

Guitar Tip #1 - You are incredibly unlikely to hear anyone ever say to themselves "It is too bad we do not have more acoustic guitarists round here."

It is not a matter of people not liking acoustic guitarists; it is the fact that playing acoustic guitar instruments is something almost everyone tries to learn around the same time. The Folk Music boom collapsed under its own weight due to this. There were too many acoustic guitarists who only knew 3 chords and a few songs.

Guitar Tip #2 - You absolutely need to be able to learn to sing.

You are eventually going to have to learn to sing, and so you might as well learn how to sing the right way. Singing is something that is going to make you much more valuable and versatile as a guitar player. It is also very satisfying to sing once you really get the hang of it. You are going to have more fun and you are going to get more work in the process. It doesn't even matter if your voice is bad, as long as you're trying to learn how to sing.

Guitar Tip #3 - Give the concept of picking a chance.

Fingernails can be really great when you are just playing by yourself, but if you are playing with other people then you are going to need to play louder, and this means knowing how to play with a guitar pick. You don't want to end up breaking a nail trying to play with your fingers, so don't bother trying. Find a pick that suits you and start playing with it, give picks a chance.

Guitar Tip #4 - Make the effort to purchase a capo.

Capos can be really helpful if you have learned a song in one key but you need to actually sing it in a different key. They also make it possible for you to sparkle up one of your arrangements or set lists by playing a completely different section on the guitar's neck. You can play in G and C and D in the first position all night and then you can go on to capo at 5, playing D and G and A for a little while, because being able to sound different is always a good thing.

Guitar Tip #5 - Take care of your acoustic guitar.

The fact is, your top can crack. Your guitar is going to be sensitive to both temperature as well as humidity, more so than anything else that you own so take care of it, otherwise it may warp and crack when you are least expecting it.

Learning to Play the Piano

Some people believe that learning the piano must be terribly difficult. It's a beautiful sounding instrument that can either be used to play a very simple tune made up of only three notes or a complex piece of music with thousands of notes. You can peck out a tune with one finger or play intricate scores that require each finger to do something different. And you can play something that requires only about 8 keys, or one octave, or the piece can have you flying from one end of the keyboard to the other.

Given all those possibilities, it's no wonder that learning the piano looks like a complicated and difficult endeavor! Just looking at the number of keys can be intimidating—88 in total. How are you supposed to learn 88 keys and then try to figure out which combination and order to play them in?

The truth is that learning the piano is simple, as long as you can learn 7 keys—once you learn those 7, you automatically know the other 81! And whether or not you can read music, you can learn those 7 keys. In fact, you might not realize it, but you already know them, so you've already got a head start. It sounds unbelievable that it could be that simple, but it is.

You know the alphabet already. Say the first 7 letters out loud—A, B, C, D, E, F, G. You don't have to learn that, you already know it. Those are the 7 keys you need to know—and they're in that order on the keyboard. Once you hit a key and figure out which note it is (which letter it is) then the next is simply the next letter in the alphabet. And when you hit G it starts over against with A. It doesn't sound so complicated now, does it?

While this might seem like very simplified instructions, this is where everyone learning the piano starts, with the most basic information, the names of the notes. See the black keys on the keyboard? Notice that they're grouped in twos and threes. Every group of two black keys comes directly after a C, so the white key to the left of the first black key in every group of two—the white key actually to the left and touching that key—is a C, without exception. Now that you know this, you can find every C on the keyboard. And by going backwards or forward in the alphabet you can name every white key.

Now that learning to play piano no longer sounds so intimidating, get a basic piano instruction book for beginners so that you can learn to associate each key with its written note. You can find courses online to help you learn, or you can take private lessons. And if you'll think of learning in step by step terms and see how simple each step is, you'll be learning the piano and tickling the ivories in no time.

Scale Degree

Chords are also capable of being distinguished as well as notated based on the scale degree for their root note or their bass note. For example, since the C major scale's first scale degree is the C note, a triad that is built on top of this note is going to be referred to as a one chord, which could be notated as 1, as I or as C. In this case, an assumption would be made that the particular piece of music's key signature would indicate what function the C major triad would be fulfilling for the musician as well as any specialized role that the chord is going to play outside of its typical diatonic function.

When you are taking any major scale and building it into a triad using a base in the scale, then the second, the third and the sixth intervals, when they are used as a root, are going to form a minor triad. The root, the fourth and the fifth will form a major triad, but then the seventh is going to go into forming a diminished triad. When in their minor modes, building upon the second scale degree is going to result in a more diminished chord, but building the triad upon the third, sixth and seventh scale degrees is going to yield major chords.

Roman numerals are often used in order to indicate the chord's root as a scale degree for a particular major key, like so:

When the Roman numeral is I, the scale degree is tonic.
When the Roman numeral is II, the scale degree is supertonic.
When the Roman numeral is III, the scale degree is mediant.
When the Roman numeral is IV, the scale degree is subdominant.
When the Roman numeral is V, the scale degree is dominant.
When the Roman numeral is VI, the scale degree is submediant.
When the Roman numeral is VII, the scale degree is leading tone or subtonic.

Many analysts make use of lower case Roman numerals in order to indicate the minor triads, and then upper case roman numerals are used to indicate major triads. Degrees as well as plus signs are then used in order to indicate augmented triads and diminished triads, with degrees indicating diminished triads and plus signs indicating augmented ones. When they are not being used, all of the numerals are capitalized, and then the qualifiers of those chords are inferred from the scale degrees contained by the chord. For example, a chord that is built in C major on VI would contain the A, C and E notes, and would thusly be a minor triad. The chords that are not on this scale would be indicated using flat signs and sharp signs before the chord.

But along with learning different positions for playing the various chords on an acoustic guitar you need to dedicate time each week to practicing your skills. Ideally when it comes to you wanting to learn to play acoustic guitar well spend around ½ hour each day every day of the week on your practice.

Not only will regular practice ensure that your fingers are kept in the right condition for playing but you will train your ears to. The more you are able to develop your ear for music then this will help in improving the way in which you play. Plus in no time at all you may find yourself being able to improvise when playing a certain piece of music or find it much easier to learn a new piece that you have only just heard.

Most people are more than capable of learning how to play the acoustic guitar successfully and yet many beginning players seem to give up very quickly. Frequently, beginners that end up quitting are going to blame it on their lack of time available for practicing, while others will explain that they quit because their fingers hurt from playing. The problem here is simply that they are not practicing and playing enough, and if they were to practice more than clearly both of these problems would be nipped in the bud. No, this article isn't going to be able to offer you more time for practicing, but what it is going to do is show you how you can become more successful as a guitar player without having to rely on expensive paid lessons.

1 - First and foremost, you are going to want to consider buying what is known as a Grip Master, along with some callus-builder caps. You might consider this before you even make a guitar purchase. You can build up finger calluses and strength quite quickly with this method. You can also encourage the growth of calluses by applying rubbing alcohol to your fingertips.

2 - Research the various instruction websites online, then make a choice. There are hundreds of sites on the internet that offer free lessons, plenty of which are well designed, and can be applied to your practicing routine. Also, your questions are much more likely to be answered in depth.

3 - You are going to want to learn how you can distinguish between the better musicians and those that are not as good. If you are just about as good as your current favorite musician once you have spent a few weeks playing, then the next step is to step your tastes up a little bit so that you can constantly be trying to improve your playing.

4 - Now what you are going to want to do is to study the actual instrument's physical body. You should take the time to learn all of the names and all of the functions for the guitar parts, and you should take the time to come to understand how they are all constantly working together in order to produce sound. Spending only a half an hour on understanding the basics of the guitar is going to pay off significantly through your learning and your playing by giving you a better appreciation for what your guitar is capable of.

5 - Now you are going to want to get the optimal amount of performance and sound by learning exactly how the guitar emits its sounds, how the strings are affected by tension, and how the sound can differ based on the size of the strings and the length of the strings. Understanding the mechanics is a big part of getting the most out of your guitar.

6 - Now you are going to want to learn as many different ways as you can for playing a chord. For example, there are ten different basic hand positions that you can use in order to play a basic C chord. Obviously you are going to want to be going for the perfect open C chord primarily, but the more ways that you learn how to play a chord, the greater level of flexibility you are going to have when it comes to transitioning from one chord to the next one. This is going to come in handy when it comes to learning how to compose your own music.

7 - You should practice at least five days a week for a bare minimum of a half hour. If you want to learn more quickly, then you have to force feed yourself and your brain the guitar. This includes having a good ear for tone and pitch, and learning how to comfortably place your body, which includes back, legs, arms, and shoulders, proper hand coordination for strumming and fret technique, and lastly, fret-hand muscle memory.

8 - You are going to want to practice your chords and your hand positions whenever possible, even when watching television or talking to friends. Learning the hand muscle memory for frets is actually quite difficult in comparison to learning hand muscle memory for strumming, except for when it comes to finger picking. You will not actually have to use your other hand, just use the one hand to go over the different chords as often as you can. This is going to keep you avoiding looking down too much at your hands while you are practicing. When you are learning the chord positions you are going to want to study your fingers, ensuring that you are getting the chord positions all correct so that the muscle memory will also be correct. Over time you are going to want to look less and less often at your fingers but do not be afraid to check occasionally to ensure that the proper positions are being achieved. Your confidence in the position of your fingers will be improved to the point where you do not need to look as often in the future.

9 - It is wise for you to press on the strings as hard as if you were actually playing so that you can build calluses on the tips of your fingers. It is going to be uncomfortable at first, but once you manage to develop the appropriate calluses on your fingertips, the pain is going to disappear. The length of time that is required to make this happen is going to be completely up to you depending on how often you practice and for how long.
