It is important that you consider the experience and expertise level of the player when buying your new oboe. For example, if the player is a child just about to begin the first oboe lesson, it may not make sense to purchase an elite instrument. Wood or Plastic Instrument?

The next consideration that you need to make, which is one of the most important factors to consider, is the material that your oboe is crafted from. Although the customary material used for crafting traditional oboes is wood, there are now a number of plastic oboe options that can produce an equally as professional sound. You may want to sit down and research the different options and the pros and cons that are associated with each one before you make the decision between wood or plastic varieties.

Although wooden oboes can produce a high quality sound, they also require that you spend an ample amount of time caring for them in order to make sure that they do not break, warp or otherwise become destroyed over time. However, wooden oboes do inevitably crack or become worn out through years of use, no matter how much care you put into keeping them in healthy shape. Plastic oboes may produce simpler sounds in general, but they are much more durable and can survive longer periods of time without cracking, warping or otherwise becoming destroyed with use.

Once you have established which oboe will best suit your experience level and where you want to take your level of professionalism, and once you have determined which type of oboe will best suit your needs based on the material it is crafted from, you will be ready to set your sights on a beautiful new Oboe that will allow you to play beautiful music for many years.

1 - Do not blow too hard when playing the oboe, as you may end up with a sound that is harsh and unpleasant.

2 - If you are having trouble covering all of the key holes with your fingers, it may be wise to use small squares of duct tape which can cover the holes with the keys. This is a temporary solution, but like training wheels on a bike, it will help to ease you into proper playing.

3 - When you are blowing, you should avoid tensing your lips in order to avoid creating a muffled tone. Your lips should be envisioned as pillows on the instrument rather than as clamps.

4 - If you are serious about learning how to play the oboe, then it would be wise to join the band or orchestra in your school, though another option is to find private instruction in order to learn more about this instrument.

5 - You are not going to suddenly master this instrument in a few minutes of play. When learning how to play the oboe, you should begin light with simple material and then gradually work your way up until you reach the more difficult songs that you would like to learn how to play.

6 - Keeping your oboe clean should begin by buying a swab for your instrument. Swabbing is essential to keeping your oboe in good shape, especially if it is a wooden oboe and if you intend to play during cold or dry weather.

7 - Resist the temptation to play your oboe using a plastic reed. Plastic reeds may be sturdier than cane reeds, but the sound that they produce is inferior, plastic reeds cannot be manipulated, and you will never develop a proper embouchure if you use them.

8 - You should never force the pieces of your oboe together with one another. Different temperatures and changes in climate can cause the cork joints to become swollen, and this is completely normal. You should apply a liberal amount of cork grease until the pieces slide together easily without breaking, cracking or warping the pieces of your instrument.

9 - Find another oboe player in your area, because having a mentor when you are just learning how to play can be a true godsend.

10 - It is important that you be very careful when playing with cane reeds, as they can break easily and are much more expensive than the reeds that are used for other similar instruments.

11 - Make sure that the holes on all of the keys are completely covered, or you may end up producing an unfortunate or unpleasant sound as a result.

12 - Do not play the oboe right after you eat, because the salts, sugars and food residues left in your mouth can damage your oboe. Rinse your mouth out or brush your teeth prior to playing in order to keep your oboe in good working condition.

The Oboe and the Cor Anglais, which is the English Horn, are both conical bore, double reed, wooden instruments. There are other instruments that fit into the Oboe family including the Hecklephone and the Oboe d'Amore. Oboes have seen more than 400 years of use in orchestras and they are among one of the most well established instruments in the entire Orchestra family.

The oboe is generally just slightly lower in pitch than the sound that the flute produces, and therefore the oboe commonly falls into the alto register of the orchestra's woodwind section. The Cor Anglais on the other hand is a relatively larger family member in relation to the Oboe, it is also lower in pitch and it is often featured specifically for the more resonant and melancholy tone that it is capable of producing.

In comparison to other types of modern instruments in the woodwind family, the Oboe's voice is clear and penetrating. The voice of the Oboe has been described as being stately and majestic, and only slightly inferior to the voice of the trumpet, which is a renowned woodwind instrument. If a duck were a songbird, it was once said, then you could say that the Oboe's voice resembled that of a duck. The oboe's timbre is derived from the conical bore of the instrument, in comparison to the bore of clarinets and flutes which is generally cylindrical. As a result of the conical bore and the sound it produces, oboes are generally quite readily audible over the other instruments when played in large musical ensembles.

The oboe is pitched in C, and has a range from mezzo-soprano to soprano. Orchestras often tune their instruments to a concert A such as A440 that is played by the oboe. According to a group known as the League of American Orchestras, this is primarily done because the oboe's pitch is penetrating and secure, making it an excellent instrument for the purposes of tuning. The oboe pitch can be affected by how the reed is made. Variations in the construction materials and can, the reed's age and differences in the length and scrap of the reed can all impact the instrument's natural pitch.
