Intervals

Intervals are the relationships that exist between two different musical pitches. As an example, in the popular melody "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", the melody's first two notes, making up the word twinkle, and the second two notes in the melody, making up the second word twinkle are both at a 1/5th interval. What this actually means is that if both of the first two notes were in the C pitch, then the second notes would be in the G pitch with a difference of four scale notes or a perfect fifth, seven chromatic notes apart.

Here are some common intervals:

• When the root is C, the major third is E, the minor third is Eb and the fifth is G.
• When the root is Db, the major third is F, the minor third is Fb and the fifth is Ab.
• When the root is D, the major third is F#, the minor third is F and the fifth is A.
• When the root is Eb, the major third is G, the minor third is Gb and the fifth is Bb.
• When the root is E, the major third is G#, the minor third is G and the fifth is B.
• When the root is F, the major third is A, the minor third is Ab and the fifth is C.
• When the root is F#, the major third is A#, the minor third is A and the fifth is C#.
• When the root is G, the major third is B, the minor third is Bb and the fifth is D.
• When the root is Ab, the major third is C, the minor third is Cb and the fifth is Eb.
• When the root is A, the major third is C#, the minor third is C and the fifth is E.
• When the root is Bb, the major third is D, the minor third is Db and the fifth is F.
• When the root is B, the major third is D#, the minor third is D and the fifth is F#.

What this means is that any combination of notes with specific intervals, making up a chord, is capable of creating harmony. In the musical scale, there are twelve different pitches. Each of these pitches is capable of being referred to as a degree of that scale. The names of the notes are insignificant, however their intervals are not.

Typically, scales are listed from the lowest to the highest. Scales are octave-repeating when their patterns of notes are the same from one octave to the next. Octave repeating scales are capable of being represented as circular arrangements of pitch classes that are ordered by either increasing or by decreasing pitch class. For example, the increasing scale in C major is C D E F G A B C, but the last C is a full octave higher than the original note. A decreasing scale in C major would appear as C B A G F E D C, but the second C, again, would be an entire octave lower than the original note in the scale.

A single scale is capable of being manifested in a wide variety of different pitch levels. As an example, a scale in C major is capable of being started at middle C or C4, an ascending up an octave to C5, or it can begin at C6 and then ascend an entire octave up to C7.

Scales are capable of being described according to whatever intervals are contained within them, such as with diatonic scales, chromatic scales and whole tone scales. They are based on the number of different pitch classes that are contained within them, in the case of pentatonic scales, hexatonic scales or heptatonic scales, which are five pitch class, six pitch class and seven pitch class containing scales respectively. In prehistoric forms of music you will find ditonic, tritonic and tetratonic scales, which are two pitch class, three pitch class and four pitch class containing scales respectively. In jazz music and modern classical music you will find octatonic scales, which contain eight pitch classes.

Scales are capable of being abstracted from composition or from performance. They are also commonly used in a precompositional manner in order to guide or to limit a particular composition. The explicit instruction in these scales has long been a part of compositional training for several centuries now. One or more scales is capable of being used in a single composition.

As a beginner playing the acoustic guitar, you probably look for music anywhere you can find it. Most of the guitar notes that you can find online and in guitar music books comes in tablature. It is difficult in this day and age to find music available in sheet music form for the guitar, though sheet music is still available for other instruments such as the violin and the piano for example. It is nearly impossible for people to learn how to play acoustic guitar music in this day and age without first having learned how to read and understand guitar tablature.

Acoustic guitar tablature, also known as "guitar tab" is actually relatively easy for you to learn if you know how to get started. Getting used to playing acoustic guitar tab is a completely different situation, but it is not impossible to get used to playing guitar tablature once you have a feel for what you are doing. This is because guitar tablature is designed specifically to make guitar playing easier, and once you get the hang of it, reading it and interpreting it will be much easier.

If you are used to learning how to play songs on the guitar with sheet music, then learning guitar tablature will definitely be a unique experience. If you are just learning how to play the guitar for the first time, however, then reading and interpreting tablature will come a little more naturally. You do not have to unlearn knowing how to read regular sheet music, but you do need to learn how to interpret the music in a completely new way. Acoustic tablature reading is just an additional skill that you can learn that will improve your capabilities in reading and interpreting music.

There is no real answer to which type of music is better, because both sheet music and guitar tabs have their benefits. What it really is a matter of is which you are going to find when you are looking for a favorite song. If you are a classically trained musician, then sheet music may be a preferred method of learning to play, but guitar tab is easier to come by and much more practical to learn for most acoustic guitar players. There are a wide variety of different music books out there that not only come equipped with guitar tab, but also teach you how to read it.
