Mstislav Rostropovich was born on March 27, 1927 and died on April 27, 2007. He is known as one of the most influential cellists in history. From 1977 until 1994, he was musical director and conductor of the U.S. National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, while still performing with some of the most famous musicians such as Martha Argerich, Sviatoslav Richter and Vladimir Horowitz. Rostropovich has also been a frequent participant at the Aldeburgh Festival in the UK and is the founder and directory of the Rostropovich Music Festival.

Rostropovich began learning the piano from his mother at age four. She was a talented pianist in her own right and was able to give him lessons herself. At age 10, he decided to switch to the cello and studied under his father, an accomplish cellist. Between 1943 and 1948, he attended the Moscow Conservatory, eventually becoming a cello professor in 1956. He first burst onto the music scene in 1945, winning a gold medal in the first Soviet music competition for younger musicians.

Mstislav Rostropovich was persecuted by the Soviet government for his beliefs regarding free speech and democracy. In 1948, while attending the Moscow Conservatory, his teacher Dmitri Shostakovich was dismissed from his professorships in Leningrad and Moscow. Rostropovich, who was 21 at the time, left the Conservatory and dropped out to protest the move. Later on, he sheltered political refugee Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in his own residence, despite the consequences if they got caught. This relationship with Solzhenitsyn eventually led to his being decreed an official disgrace by the government. He and his wife were prohibited from touring out of the country and he was restricted to a recital tour of only small towns in Siberia.

He was forced to leave the Soviet Union in 1974 as a political refugee. Rostropovich and his family moved to the United States in search of freedom. He had been banned from several ensembles in the Soviet Union, eventually having his citizenship revoked in 1978. Despite this, he supported Boris Yeltsin's illegal shelling of the Russian parliament during the 1993 constitutional crisis. He was also known to be friendly with Vladimir Putin, which seems to contradict his freedom-loving values.

Rostropovich and his wife began their own foundation to focus on social issues and create activities in their homeland of Azerbaijan. Among the programs started by the foundation include a public vaccination initiative and the Rostropovich Home Museum in Baku. Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya visited Azerbaijan occasionally. Rostropovich also presented cello master classes at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory. In addition to his social programs, Rostropovich has been a major influence on an entire generation of cellists.

Rostropovich's unexpected public performance at the fall of the Berlin Wall gained him additional fame and led to the Russian government restoring his citizenship in 1990. He has also received awards from all over the world, along with honorary doctorates from a number of prominent universities. He has been a freedom fighter throughout his life, battling for freedom of speech in both politics and the arts.

Yo-Yo Ma grew up predisposed toward music. Both his parents were active in the performing arts and influenced his musical background. His mother, Marina Lu, was a singer, and his father, Hiao-Tsiun Ma, was a conductor and composer. His family moved to New York when he was four years old. He was married to long-time girlfriend Jill Hornor in 1977 and the couple has two children. The family currently resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ma and his older sister operate the Children's Orchestra Society.

He began his musical career at an early age, studying violin, viola, and cello all before the age of four. He started performing in front of live audiences by five years old and performed for President John F. Kennedy at the age of seven. When he was eight years old, he appeared on American television in a concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein. At fifteen years old, Yo-Yo Ma graduated from Trinity School in New York and began appearing as a soloist with the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra in a performance of the Tchaikovsky: Rococo Variations.

After graduation, Ma attended the Juilliard School of Music with Leonard Rose, then Columbia University, and finally ended up at Harvard. By that time, he had already performed with many of the top orchestras in the world. Ma has also been known for his chamber music performances with pianist Emanuel Ax. Yo-Yo Ma's current project is the Silk Road Ensemble, which brings together musicians from all around the world. The project is currently being handled and recorded by the Sony's Classical music division.

Ma enjoyed a resurgence of fame in 1997, after being featured on the soundtrack to Seven Years in Tibet, by John Williams. In 2000, he was part of the soundtrack for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which became a surprise blockbuster hit. Ma then worked with Williams again on the soundtrack for 2005's Memoirs of a Geisha. He has also collaborated with Italian composer Ennio Morricone and has performed his own recordings of Morricone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly trilogy. Yo-Yo Ma has recorded over 75 albums, with 15 of those winning a Grammy award. He has also been awarded the Award of Excellence by The International Center in New York City, among many other lifetime awards.

Yo-Yo Ma's playing style is more eclectic than that of most classical musicians. His tremendous versatility can be seen in numerous recordings of the standard classical repertoire, along with Baroque pieces using period instruments, American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies including the soundtrack to the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the tangos of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, a collaboration with Bobby McFerrin, and even the music of modern minimalist Philip Glass in such works as the 2002 piece, Naqoyqatsi. In 2006, he performed on the critically acclaimed soundtrack for Memoirs of a Geisha. Ma's rich, mellow tone is the most well-known attribute of his music and his flexibility and versatility is legendary among classical musicians.

While few people can name a double bass player (though many can name a bass guitar player) some bassists actually break out and perform solo bass. Some even go on to record an entire album of solo bass, like double bassist Mike Milligan. When many people think of a bass, they think of type of guitar rather than the grand double bass. A double bass is the large instrument that sits on the ground while the musician sits in a chair behind it, and almost seems wrapped around the instrument as he or she plays. Not a terribly popular instrument in the rock bands of today, the double bass actually is used in some popular music, and is a crucial instrument in orchestral music. And some musicians make its solo sound something to truly celebrate.

Mike Milligan is a double bassist from Canada who has performed in large groups, trios, and extensive solo performances. He was a first-place semi-finalist at the 1986 Montreal Jazz Festival, and won grants to compose music for the bass as well as study with prestigious instructors. Not only has he won first prize in the Vienna Jazz Festival, a large and prestigious international competition held yearly in France, but he's done something few other double bassists ever do, whether they play jazz or classical music. He released a solo bass CD in 1997 to both critical and fan acclaim.

Mike studied double bass with masters like Dave Holland and George Mraz and has performed with internationally known artists like Chet Baker, David Liebman, Sonny Greenwich, Billy Kilson, Jeff Ballard and scores of others. He's gone on tour with the group “Shuffle Demons” giving dozens of well-received performances across Canada and Europe, and took place as part of the house band in 2005 and 2006 at the Ottawa Jazz Festival.

Unlike many other double bassists, Mike also plans to release a second CD. He regularly performs in various trios and small groups across Toronto, all while privately teaching double bass along with electric bass and jazz techniques and improvisation from his music studio in Toronto. Because performing an entire album of solo bass music is a challenge for any bassist, performing one that's also hailed by critics and jazz aficionados, and plan another, is a doubly-impressive feat.

To prepare for recording the album, Mike again ventured into mostly untapped territory for the bassist—solo performances. He gave several entire concerts featuring nothing but his solo bass music, some of it composed by him and some of it improvised in his unique jazz style. Mike uses a late 1950's German double bass that's hand-carved with a solid top and back and heavy gauge D'Addario Heliocore Double Bass strings. Given the fine instrument, Mike's extensive performing experience and innovative techniques for bring more to the performance of the double bass, his new CD looks to be as good as his last. His CD is called “Solo Flights,” and will enhance your appreciation of the jazz bass sound.

Learning how to play a musical instrument can be an exciting and rewarding adventure. Finding the right instrument is an integral part of learning how to play beautiful music on this intriguing and exciting instrument. If your mission is to purchase a brand new oboe, then it is important to know some basic concepts before you go out shopping. This will help to make sure that you purchase the right oboe based on your skill level. An oboe buying guide will be helpful not only for beginning oboe students purchasing their first instruments, but also for professionals who are purchasing their third, fourth or even tenth instrument because a little bit of guidance can go a long way.

Take a look at the level of experience -

It is important that you consider the experience and expertise level of the player when buying your new oboe. For example, if the player is a child just about to begin the first oboe lesson, it may not make sense to purchase an elite instrument. In the same thread, a player who is working to seriously develop his or her skills will not benefit from an oboe that was intended for beginning players.

Wood or Plastic Instrument?

The next consideration that you need to make, which is one of the most important factors to consider, is the material that your oboe is crafted from. Although the customary material used for crafting traditional oboes is wood, there are now a number of plastic oboe options that can produce an equally as professional sound. You may want to sit down and research the different options and the pros and cons that are associated with each one before you make the decision between wood or plastic varieties.

Although wooden oboes can produce a high quality sound, they also require that you spend an ample amount of time caring for them in order to make sure that they do not break, warp or otherwise become destroyed over time. However, wooden oboes do inevitably crack or become worn out through years of use, no matter how much care you put into keeping them in healthy shape. Plastic oboes may produce simpler sounds in general, but they are much more durable and can survive longer periods of time without cracking, warping or otherwise becoming destroyed with use.

These are the two most basic things that you need to know when it comes to buying an oboe. Once you have established which oboe will best suit your experience level and where you want to take your level of professionalism, and once you have determined which type of oboe will best suit your needs based on the material it is crafted from, you will be ready to set your sights on a beautiful new Oboe that will allow you to play beautiful music for many years.

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 31, 1685 and lived until July 28, 1750. He was regarded as a famous German composer and organist with sacred and secular works for orchestra, choir and solo instruments that brought the Baroque period to its ultimate level of maturity. He did not introduce any new forms, but he did enrich the German style of music using a contrapuntal technique. Johann Sebastian Bach produced many works that were revered for their technical command, their intellectual depth and their artistic beauty. Some of his most known works include -

- The Brandenburg concertos
- The Goldberg Variations
- The English Suites
- French Suites
- Partitas
- Well-Tempered Clavier
- The Mass in B Minor
- The St. Matthew Passion
- The St. John Passion
- The Magnificat
- The Musical Offering
- The Art of Fugue
- The Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo
- The Cello Suites
- More than 200 surviving cantatas
- Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

Johann Sebastian Bach received most of his fame as an organist during his lifetime, but while he was alive he was not particularly well known or well regarded as a composer. He gained his notoriety as a composer after his death because his adherence to Baroque forms of music as well as contrapuntal style were considered old fashioned until later in his career and after his death. In the early 19th century interest in his music and performances of his music were revived, and now he is often regarded as one of the greatest composers in all of Western music tradition.

His health fell into decline around 1749. Planning for his decease, as of June 2 of 1749 his musical director Gottlob Harrer began to audition someone to succeed him. He died on July 28, 1750 at the age of 65, and his death was originally attributed to the unhappy consequences of the very unsuccessful eye operation according to a contemporary newspaper at the time. Some modern historians have instead speculated that a stroke complicated by the onset of pneumonia was the real cause of his death, but the truth is still not known to this day. His estate, upon his death, included numerous musical instruments, including cellos, violas, violins, harpsichords, clevecins, lutes, viola da gambas, lute-harpsichords and spinets.

During his life and musical career, Johann Sebastian Bach composed more than 1,000 different works, most of which are still intensely popular today. His music is common for students learning to play many acoustic instruments including piano, stringed instruments like the viola and violin and numerous other instruments as well. His music is also common among composers and in orchestral selections. Although regarded more for his organist career during his lifetime, Johann Sebastian Bach is now better known for his compositions, as a revival of his music in the early half of the 19th century brought renewed interest to his repertoire of music which spans more than 1,000 different acoustic musical pieces.

Brief Bio:

Joan Chandos Baez was born on January 9 in 1941 in Staten Island, New York. She is an American folk singer and songwriter that is best known for an individual vocal style as well as her three octave vocal range. Many of her songs are topical in nature, reflecting her interest in social issues and political issues. She is well known for a long lasting passion for activism in areas like non violence, civil rights, human rights and the environment. She also gained notoriety for a long lasting relationship with Bob Dylan. She has been performing publicly for nearly 50 years, and has recorded songs in at least eight different languages. Although after the 1960s her music strayed from folk music to encompass numerous other genres, she is still considered to be largely a folk singer.

Although Joan Baez is a songwriter herself, Baez more commonly interprets the work of other singers and songwriters, covering the songs of other performers like Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder among others. In more recent years, she has begun to interpret music from a more diverse collection of songwriters including Ryan Adams, Steve Earle and Natalie Merchant.

Where She is Now:

Joan Baez is still active in music today and appears to have plenty of years left in her musical career. In February of 2007 she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She played out the final set on the Acoustic State at the Glastonbury Festival on June 29, 2008, playing to a sold out crowd. She played at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 6, 2008, ending the concert by dancing with a band of African percussionists. In September 2008 she released Day After Tomorrow, her 33rd studio album.

Career Highlights:

Between 1960 and 2008, Joan Baez has released a total of 33 studio albums, and has been included in the production of 17 compilations. She has also released 11 singles throughout the length of her career. In addition to her musical career, Joan Baez has also been active in politics, regularly voicing her opinion regarding civil rights, nonviolence and social change. Her political activism began when she heard a young Martin Luther King Jr. speak regarding similar subjects, and she spent numerous occasions demonstrating and marching with him from that point on.

Interesting and Inspirational Quotes:

"The easiest kind of relationship for me is with ten thousand people. The hardest is with one." - Joan Baez

"Instead of getting hard ourselves and trying to compete, women should try and give their best qualities to men - bring them softness, teach them how to cry." - Joan Baez

"It seems to me that those songs that have been any good, I have nothing much to do with the writing of them. The words have just crawled down my sleeve and come out on the page." - Joan Baez

Carlos Salzedo was born in 1885 and lived until 1961. During this time, he was a well known and highly regarded conductor, composer and harpist. He was born in Arcachon in France. The Salzedo Harp Colony located in Camden, Maine is named after him. He was invited to take the position of the principal harpist for the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1909, and left France for America during his time. He formed the Trio de Lutece during the same time that he took the Metropolitan Opera position, though he left both positions in 1913 so that he could serve in the army from 1914 to 1915. He continued with the Trio upon his return, but did not take his job at the Metropolitan Opera back up. He formed the Incorporation of National Association of Harpists in 1920 and was elected to the presidential position of this association. Not only was Carlos Salzedo a gifted harpist with a penchant for discovering new and unique music styles, but he was also a well known composer and conductor, as well as a teacher.

Where He Is Now -

Carlos Salzedo passed away in 1961, but continued to teach up until the day he died. He died in the colony in Maine, passing the reins on to a good friend by the name of Alice Chalifoux. Today he is still regarded as one of the greatest harpists in history. He is most known for his progressive spirit, consistently seeking new resources in the harp and inspiring and creating new styles of music and new works and compositions accordingly. Hisideas even led to the designs of two harps that are still manufactured today, the art-nouveau style 11, as well as the art deco Salzedo model, both of which are manufactured by Lyon and Healy.

Career Highlights -

Not only did Salzedo spend many years playing as the principal harpist for the Metropolitan Opera in the United States, but he also continued to write noteworthy compositions that focused on never before seen techniques in harp litecture, including the Suite of Eight Dances, Song of the Night and Variations on a Theme in Ancient Style. He established the harp department in the Curtis Institute of Music in 1924 and founded the Salzedo Summer Harp Colony located in Camden, Maine. The International Composers Guild ended in 1927 and the National Association of Harpists ended in 1933. Salzedo continued to teach, never the less, all the way up to his death.

Interesting and Inspirational Quotes -

"Since the harp does require necessary gestures, these gestures must be correct not only functionally but aesthetically as well. Music is meant to be heard, but also to be looked at--otherwise radio would have long ago supplanted the concert stage which, fortunately, it has not." - Carlos Salzedo

"When the hands react sensitively to the various rhythmical and emotional requirements of music, there is no difficulty in rendering a composition as intended by the composer." - Carlos Salzedo

"Harp is to music what music is to life." - Carlos Salzedo

A member of the brass family, the trombone is a wind instrument that is played much in the same way as other brass instruments. The lips are pursed and the musician blows into the mouthpiece in order to create sound. The trombone is unique in that it features a slide that is used to change the overall length, and hence the tone, that is produced. There can be versions possessing the valves that a trumpet possesses, but the one that is in greater use is the version featuring the slide.

Trombones have existed for quite the long time. Before they received the name trombone in the late 19th century, they were previously referred to by the name sackbuts. Both instruments are similar in appearance, but there are quite a few significant differences that set the trombone apart from the sackbuts. The changes came about as the trombone was perfected into what is now classified as a trombone. The greatest difference between the trombone and sackbuts is the presences of the slide, and the flaring of the bell at the end from sound emerges. The sackbuts was also a little smaller than the trombone, but despite these differences, the sackbuts was no harder to play than the modern day trombone. The trombone is a little easier to play, with more flexibility. That being said, it still takes getting use to playing when it is first learned.

The trombone is a popular instrument in school bands. It is not an expensive instrument, and it is easily found in just about any music store, especially at a reduced price. The music for the trombone is also easily obtained and is also relatively inexpensive. Another attraction is the ease at which the instrument is learned. It is not easy, but easier than other instruments to learn.

The process in which someone learns how to play involves learning how to control breathing and how to move the slide to create specific pitches. This process can be tricky and difficult, as the trombone is easy to get sound from, but it requires a great deal of practice and patience to master. The most difficult skill to master is placing the slide at the positions needed to generate the correct pitches. The ease at which sound is generated and learning musical notation is picked up makes it an ideal choice for school bands. Students of the trombone, like with any other instrument, need to put in the time and practice in order to become skilled. If a player is serious about learning the trombone and becoming skilled, then they will have no difficulty in learning how to play the instrument through practice.

The trombone is an instrument which is easy to learn how to play, but requires time and effort in order to master. It has a long history of play and it good for any beginner to pick up. It is a popular instrument in schools due to its ease in learning. The trombone is one of the classic instruments.

American violinist Isaac Stern was born on July 21, 1920 and died on September 22, 2001. During his lifetime, he won several prestigious awards, including the 1982 Sonning Award and a number of Grammys. In addition to receiving recognition for his own works, Stern was also known to have a knack for finding talented new musicians. His major discoveries include violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, along with renowned Chinese cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Jian Wang.

Stern was born to Jewish parents in Kremenetz, Ukraine and moved to the United States when he was only ten months old. His mother taught him the joy of music, privately instructing him until 1928, when he attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1928. In 1931, he moved on to work privately with Louis Persinger and then spent another five years with Naoum Blinder after that. He made his first public performance in 1936 when he played in the San Francisco Symphony at the early age of 15.

In 1948, he married ballerina Nora Kaye, but this marriage unfortunately did not last very long. They divorced the next year, in 1949. He re-married in 1951, wedding Vera Lindenblit. They stayed married for 43 years, having three children along the way. Stern married his last wife, Linda Reynolds, in 1997 and was still married to her at the time of his passing at age 81.

In his professional life, Stern recorded concertos written by Samuel Barber, Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, Johannes Brahms, Johann Sebastian Bach, Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Antonio Vivaldi, and Henri Dutilleux. In 1985, Stern commissioned the Dutilleux concerto L'Arbre des Songes himself. His playing can be found in a number of films, including the famed Fiddler on the Roof. Stern also was the musical advisor for Humoresque, a 1946 film starring John Garfield and Joan Crawford. The film portrayed an up-and-coming violinist and his partner, which greatly appealed to Stern on a personal and professional level.

Stern credits Nathan Milstein, Naoum Blinder, and Arthur Grumiaux as the main influences on his violin playing, with Blinder being his first significant mentor. He teamed up with Eugene Istomin and Leonard Rose to form a talented chamber music trio. The threesome won Grammy awards in 1971 and again in 1992. In 1987, he was given the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in music, an honor reserved for only the most respected musicians. Along the way, he also received Grammys for Best Instrumental Soloist in 1962, 1963, 1965, and 1982.

His fame and recognition extended well beyond musical circles. In 1979, Stern was invited for an unprecedented visit to the People's Republic of China. This was at a time when outside visitors were still not generally welcome into the Communist country, but Stern and pianist David Golub were welcomed with open arms. He also played a significant part in saving Carnegie Hall from destruction in 1960. Later on, the main auditorium was re-named after him in appreciation for his efforts.
