Fender only produced acoustic guitars during a brief period in the company's history, but the guitars made during that time have become favorites of collectors and musicians alike. The advent of online auction sites such as Ebay has created an active market for used acoustic instruments. Unfortunately, there are a limited number of models available to collect because Fender only manufactured acoustic guitars from 1963 until 1971.

The same design features that make Fender electric guitars so popular are also used on their acoustic guitar line. This includes a bolted on neck with a solid metal neckplate, two screws in the pickguards and a six on one side tuner setup. This construction makes them more durable and playable than the other guitars produced at the time.

The first Fender acoustic guitar was the King model, first produced in 1963 and later reintroduced as the Kingman in 1966. Production of the Kingman model lasted until 1971, when the entire acoustic guitar line was discontinued by the company. The King used the innovative Fender bolted on neck design, which required an additional aluminum bar through the middle to strengthen the body. This gave the Fender acoustic guitars a distinctive sound and made them feel more like an electric guitar.

The King and Kingman models were offered in a number of top quality guitar woods, making them a popular choice for musicians of all types. Each year, Fender made some minor cosmetic alterations to the King model, distinguishing it from prior years' guitars. Collectors can use the design changes in hardware neck inlays to determine the instrument's date of manufacture. The serial numbers on Fender acoustic guitars do not generally list the construction date, so it can be difficult for collectors to verify that they are buying what they were promised.

In 1966, Fender brought out the Wildwood line of acoustic guitars. The Wildwood was a flat-toped variation on the original Fender King model. The main difference was the assortment of dye colors for the wood body and headstock, hence the "Wildwood" name. Fender's innovative beech dye process actually injected living trees with dye so the color would be distributed throughout the wood itself. The most popular colors for the Wildwood line of guitars were green, navy blue, gold, brown, purple, dark blue, and hybrid colors like bluish green and purple mixed with blue. The Wildwood name was the only thing to survive from the acoustic guitar line, with it continuing to be used for certain electric models with multicolored options.

The last major Fender acoustic guitar was the Wildwood II. Similar to the Wildwood model, it used Fender's standard neck design, along with a resonator bar to increase tone. The height of the Wildwood II's popularity came in the late 60s, when Charlie Pride was seen playing it onstage. Shortly after that, interest waned in Fender's acoustic guitars and the entire line was discontinued. At the time, they were not missed by the marketplace, but collectors have since some to appreciate their value and sound.

The "Dobros" name has a very long and very involved history that is closely interwoven with the resonator guitar's history as a musical instrument. The name was originally coined by the Dopyera brothers when they formed a company called the Dobro Manufacturing Company. In time the name came to mean any resonator guitar in common language, or specifically a resonator guitar that possessed a single inverted resonator. This particular design style was introduced by the Dopyera Brothers' new company as a means of competing with the biscuit and tri cone designs that were already patented and being produced by the National String Instrument Corporation. The Dobro brand later also began to appear on other instruments, notably lap steel electric guitars and solid body electric guitar styles, as well as on other resonator style instruments including Safari resonator mandolin instruments.

In 1993, Gibson acquired the Dobro name. The Gibson company announced at this point that it would continue to defend its right to the exclusive use of the Dobro and its name. Generally speaking, the Dobro name is one that is associated with single-inverted-cone resonator designs not only in resonator guitars but also other resonator instruments as well. The Dobros name is not normally associated with either the biscuit or tri cone designs, as both are more commonly associated with the National String Instrument Corporation brand.

The Gibson company now restricts the use of the name Dobro or Dobros to its own personal product line. Care should still be taken when interpreting documents that were written either outside the United States or before 1993, as in these cases the use of Dobro or Dobroist may not necessarily refer to the Gibson's Dobro product line. When Gibson informed other guitar makers using the Dobro name of their intention to reserve exclusive rights of the name, some players began to refer to their instruments under a new name, TIFKAD, which was meant to mean "The Instrument Formerly Known as Dobro".

As of 2006, many different instrument makers including Gibson were manufacturing different styles of resonator guitars following the original inverted cone design. Gibson has also begun to manufacture the biscuit style resonator guitar, but they still reserve the Dobro name when manufacturing inverted cone models which is the original style resonator guitar. Resonator guitars recreate the traditional look and sound, and have also become the foundation for even further, newer developments in the guitar world. Many Dobros and similar style guitars are actually hybrid electric guitars. Some Dobro manufacturers are adding strings to the original design in order to create 7 string and 8 string resonator style guitars. The Dobro guitar has seen a lot of growth and change as an instrument, but still throws back to more traditional style guitars of the past despite a lot of the updates that these instruments have experienced through manufacturers like Gibson.

Weber fine acoustic instruments are manufactured by Sound to Earth in Logan, Montana. The company has steadily grown, moving from Bozeman recently to accommodate its expansion. The 25 employees make mandolins by hand in an old Logan schoolhouse. The move was necessary because Weber plans to expand their product line to include guitars in the near future. Currently, about 15 mandolins are produced every week at the Logan location. Each instrument is handworked by over a dozen people before it leaves the shop.

The initial move to Montana occurred in 1996, after the Gibson guitar company decided to relocate its Flatiron mandolin division from Belgrade to Tennessee. Bruce Weber, president of Sound to Earth was the manager of the Flatiron division at the time and did not wish to move to Nashville with the rest of his division. He went back home to Montana, along with five other Gibson employees and opened up their own mandolin shop. Because of Weber's burgeoning reputation as a master craftsman, and desire to promote business growth locally in Montana, he was able to easily find bank financing to launch the company. Now Weber has a booming company in a gorgeous location, with his wife working right alongside as a detailer. Weber instruments have become known in the music industry for their handcrafting and top quality.

Because they are a smaller company, the personal touches are important to Weber. Every Weber stringed instrument is covered by a lifetime customer service warranty. Almost all of the work is still performed by hand, except for one machine that carves the Weber logos and other decorative markings. Each employee is responsible only for a certain part of the instrument, allowing them to specialize and to ensure that there is expertise behind the fabrication of each aspect of the mandolin. Even the lowest-priced model is made with the same level of care and individual attention. The lower-end mandolins may not be as intricate and ornate as the top of the line models, but each one carries the same assurance of quality.

Maple, mahogany, and spruce arrive directly to the shop, where employees place it on the shelf to age until it is ready to be used in manufacture. The wood must have exactly the right moisture content so that it will not be too pliable or brittle. Being a smaller, independent company also allows Weber to experiment with modifications that would never have been permitted by a large company like Gibson. The innovative ebony bridge invented by Weber engineer Vern Brekke is a great example of the benefits of this freedom. The Brekke Bridge uses ebony wedges instead of screws, which makes it easier to adjust the string tension and improves the overall tone of the instrument. A new type of tailpiece is now being developed by Weber and it is expected to revolutionize the world of acoustic musical instruments in much the same way as the Brekke Bridge. If the growth continues as expected, Weber will most likely be expanding again and hiring additional employees to keep up with the workload.

Orville Gibson started the Gibson Guitar Corporation by making specialized mandolins in 1894. From the beginning, Gibson established himself as a quality instrument builder who added his own innovations. His mandolins were modified in such a way that they had a richer sound. Eventually, Gibson mandolins became the instrument of choice for bluegrass musicians. In 1936, Gibson introduced the ES-150 "Electric Spanish" guitar, continuing its tradition of innovation. The ES-150 is now known to be the first commercially produced electric guitar to become popular in the marketplace.

In 1960, Gibson brought out its line of acoustic guitars, starting with the 16 inch, square shouldered dreadnought style. The J-160E was one of the first Gibson models made as a hybrid acoustic and electric guitars. These guitars eliminated the common problem of playing unamplified acoustic guitars in live settings. Playing into a microphone can often serve to amplify the sound, but it also lets distortion and interference seep in. The musician is also limited because he or she cannot stray too far from the microphone without losing sound.

This was actually Gibson's second acoustic-electric guitar, but the first model never really caught on with musicians. The new model used a single-pickup with electronics placed into a regular dreadnought style acoustic guitar. The first models were made of plywood, with ladder bracing for added rigidity. The later models were X-braced, which was thought to improve the tone and volume of the instrument. There were elaborate crown inlays in the fingerboard, along with an adjustable bridge and single-coil pickup. The pickup was located on top of the body near the fingerboard, making it similar to the floating type of pickup used on some acoustic guitars. Unfortunately, the J-160E's sound never became very popular, with many musicians saying it sounded like a hollowed out electric guitar more than an amplified acoustic guitar.

In 1962, Gibson introduced the Dove flat-top model, which was cosmetically very different than the earlier guitars. It had a slightly changed body style and stylistic features like a cherry finish, multi-layered binding, double parallelogram fingerboard inlays, and new style of pickguard that was engraved with a depiction of flowers and a dove. The Dove guitars had a maple back and sides, along with a spruce top that gave a rich, full sound. The neck was made of maple with rosewood for the fingerboard.

One major innovation on the Dove acoustic-electric guitars was the inclusion of electronic features powered by an onboard battery. The tune-o-matic metal bridge was another major design point of the Dove model, but it unfortunately affected the tone of the guitar in a negative way. The next model introduced in 1968 further worsened the sound by including a bracing bar through the middle of the guitar. Not only did this affect the tone and volume of the instrument, it also added extra weight and made it difficult to handle. Dove acoustic electric guitars are no longer being manufactured in bulk, but can still be found in special limited-edition runs.

In the 1930's, Recording King was known for their quality banjos and guitars at reasonable prices. This was especially important at the time because the United States was stuck in the middle of the Great Depression. The instruments were included in the Montgomery Ward catalog and delivered right to people's homes.

Now, The Music Link is reintroducing the popular Recording King instruments as accurate reproductions of the models from the 1930s. Every detail is true to the original, all the way down to the parts used for the trim and hardware. Even the tone rings are a complete reissue of the 1934 specifications. The Recording King flange is thought to be the most faithful representation of the original Mastertone type flange on the market today. The newly reissued Recording King Artist Deluxe banjo has a one-piece maple neck, 20-hole tone ring, ornate gold-plated hardware, and beautiful floral engravings, giving it the feel of a prewar instrument.

The new Recording King Professional custom banjo was unveiled in Nashville at the annual World of Bluegrass festival. It includes a reshaped neck and resonator for a crisp, clear tone. With the antique finish and the painstaking aging of the wood, most of the people in attendance could not tell the difference between an authentic 1920s instrument and the Recording King banjo. This audience included many of the top experts in bluegrass and banjo music, so if they can't tell the difference, the reproduction must be spotless.

Recording King is also planning on issuing three new guitar series: Classic, Contemporary, and Historic. These guitars will all be made with solid tops and will most likely offer the option of solid-body construction for added rigidity and resonance. The acoustic guitars will include fully-scalloped x-shaped bracing from the prewar era. This type of bracing increases the available volume inside the guitar's body and adds fullness to the tone. The new guitar series will be the most authentic reproduction of the prewar models, just like the Recording King banjos.

The most difficult challenge for The Music Link in their new production of the Recording King line of musical instruments is the obtaining of quality woods at decent prices. This has become a major problem for all acoustic instrument manufacturers due to limited supplies and transportation costs. They have solved this issue by hiring an expert in manufacturing material exports and scheduling their supply deliveries far in advance. This allows Recording King to import quality woods such as Adirondack spruce, African mahogany, and Indian rosewood.

New banjos are being added to the Recording King product line almost every other month. As long as the customers keep showing interest in reproduced prewar musical instruments, they will continue expanding. Banjos are now being produced for the Asian markets of China and Japan. There are even two new custom retail shops that can provide specially-ordered instruments right there in person. One store is located in the United States and the other in Japan to capitalize on the emerging market for Recording King instruments.

Meisel violins have been around since 1659, predating Paganini and even Beethoven. The Meisel name is still synonymous with solid workmanship and quality instruments at a reasonable price. Students or professionals can find the right violin for them in Meisel's product line.

All Meisel stringed instruments exceed the specifications set out by the National Association for Music Education (MENC). The instruments are finished by hand at the Meisel violin shop. Quality of craftsmanship is always a top concern for Meisel, so fingerboards are carefully shaped and aligned and bridges are individually cut. All pegs are tested to hold tension and turn smoothly and easily.

Meisel basses, cellos, violas, and violins are all constructed with full ebony trimmings, full corner blocks, full neck and endpin blocks, full inside lining and inlaid purflings. Only the best woods and hand-rubbed varnishes are used on Meisel violins and other stringed instruments. Meisel cellos are built with only the best maple and spruce, with solid ebony fingerboards and fittings. Top quality strings and bridges round out the package. Student cellos are available with a crack-proof body that is fully-laminated.

Meisel violins have always featured a distinctive feel when playing and emit rich, warm-sounding tones. All Meisel violins are given a nice stylistic touch with their solid carved tops and backs and ebony fingerboards and hardware. Every instrument is adjusted to meet our strict specifications, which exceed those established by MENC. Student violins can be purchased in sizes all the way down to 1/32, with the normal instruments offered in 1/2 to 4/4 sizes. Smaller-sized instruments can also be purchase as a custom order.

On top of its line of quality stringed instruments, Meisel also has an assortment of musical accessories and strings to choose from. The Meisel stands are well-known for their workmanship and ease of setup. Another great Meisel innovation is the Bowzo, a temporary teaching aid that keeps the bow in the correct position. The Bowzo only permits contact with the strings when the bow is held at a 90 degree angle. It is basically an open-sided tube with a slot that is just slightly wider than the bow, allowing the Bowzo to slip over the bridge and fingerboard as a guide for the bow. It can be quickly and easily installed or taken off. Made of durable polypropylene, the Bowzo is sturdy enough to provide a solid grip on the instrument without damaging it.

Keeping the bow in the proper position is one of the areas where many musicians struggle, whether they are beginners or experienced violinists. The Meisel Bowzo is a great training aid for keeping the bow in a straight path at all times and avoiding those unpleasant screeches and squeaks that come from incorrect bowing. It is often difficult for music teachers to demonstrate the proper technique as it is something that the student must feel to really understand. Using the Bowzo lets you worry about the notes you are playing on your Meisel violin, not the technical details of how to how your bow.
