Weber fine acoustic instruments are manufactured by Sound to Earth in Logan, Montana. The company has steadily grown, moving from Bozeman recently to accommodate its expansion. The 25 employees make mandolins by hand in an old Logan schoolhouse. The move was necessary because Weber plans to expand their product line to include guitars in the near future. Currently, about 15 mandolins are produced every week at the Logan location. Each instrument is handworked by over a dozen people before it leaves the shop.

The initial move to Montana occurred in 1996, after the Gibson guitar company decided to relocate its Flatiron mandolin division from Belgrade to Tennessee. Bruce Weber, president of Sound to Earth was the manager of the Flatiron division at the time and did not wish to move to Nashville with the rest of his division. He went back home to Montana, along with five other Gibson employees and opened up their own mandolin shop. Because of Weber's burgeoning reputation as a master craftsman, and desire to promote business growth locally in Montana, he was able to easily find bank financing to launch the company. Now Weber has a booming company in a gorgeous location, with his wife working right alongside as a detailer. Weber instruments have become known in the music industry for their handcrafting and top quality.

Because they are a smaller company, the personal touches are important to Weber. Every Weber stringed instrument is covered by a lifetime customer service warranty. Almost all of the work is still performed by hand, except for one machine that carves the Weber logos and other decorative markings. Each employee is responsible only for a certain part of the instrument, allowing them to specialize and to ensure that there is expertise behind the fabrication of each aspect of the mandolin. Even the lowest-priced model is made with the same level of care and individual attention. The lower-end mandolins may not be as intricate and ornate as the top of the line models, but each one carries the same assurance of quality.

Maple, mahogany, and spruce arrive directly to the shop, where employees place it on the shelf to age until it is ready to be used in manufacture. The wood must have exactly the right moisture content so that it will not be too pliable or brittle. Being a smaller, independent company also allows Weber to experiment with modifications that would never have been permitted by a large company like Gibson. The innovative ebony bridge invented by Weber engineer Vern Brekke is a great example of the benefits of this freedom. The Brekke Bridge uses ebony wedges instead of screws, which makes it easier to adjust the string tension and improves the overall tone of the instrument. A new type of tailpiece is now being developed by Weber and it is expected to revolutionize the world of acoustic musical instruments in much the same way as the Brekke Bridge. If the growth continues as expected, Weber will most likely be expanding again and hiring additional employees to keep up with the workload.

A mandolin is a musical instrument that belongs to the lute family meaning that it can either be plucked or strummed. It is a direct descendant of a instrument called the Mandore, which is a soprano member of the same family. The mandolin instrument has a body that possesses a teardrop shaped soundboard, though it may also possess a soundboard that is essentially oval in shape, possessing either a single sound hole or multiple sound holes of varying shapes. These sound holes tend to be open and completely lacking in decoration, unlike the Baroque era mandolins which were decorated with an intricately carved grille.

The original mandolin design had six different double courses of gut strings, and these were tuned in a similar way to how lutes were tuned. The original intention here was for the strings to be plucked using the fingertips. Today on the other hand, today's common mandolin design has eight metal strings broke up into four pairs or courses, and these strings are intended to be plucked using a plectrum. The latter design originated in Naples, a city in Italy, during the latter end of the eighteenth century. There were a great number of different variations to the traditional Mandolin, and this is still true today. Some of the Mandolin variations that are still known are the Milanese, the Brescian, the Lombard and numerous other Mandolin designs with either 6-course string sets or four string course sets where only one string per course was used. There were even twelve string course set instruments and sixteen string course sets where three or four strings were used per course respectively.

The mandolin has a body which is typically hollow and crafted from wood. The mandolin's neck is usually much longer with a fat fretted finger board, or one at a slight radius, along with a nut and floating bridge and a pinblock or a tailpiece at the edge of the face that the strings can be attached to. There are also mechanical tuning machines that are used to accommodate these metal strings in place of the traditional friction pegs. Just like with the guitar, the mandolin can only support a relatively poor level of sustain. What this means is that the sound generated by plucking a string will decay rather quickly. Notes cannot usually be maintained for arbitrary lengths of time like you would be able to achieve when playing a bowed note on an instrument like the violin.

Because the Mandolin is a smaller instrument with a higher pitch, the sustain issues are much more severe than in other similar instruments like the guitar. For this reason, use of tremolo, which means to rapidly pick one or more pairs of strings on the instrument, is often the best way to create a sustained chord or note. This particular technique works well because of the Mandolin's paired strings, because one string can be sounding while the other is in the process of being struck using the pick, which gives out a sound that is more round and more continuous than what you would achieve with an instrument consisting of single courses.

Seth Lakeman, a folk music star that is nominated for a Mercury Prize has been talking about the acoustic of folk music and acoustic musical instruments. For example, Lily Allen's new single is featuring a banjo solo, which would not have happened in years past but now apparently seems to fit. He has been incredulous about things like this since he became a figurehead for the new folk music movement.

Allen's single is called "It's Not Fair", and it does actually include a banjo solo. There is no doubt about it at this point that this is because folk music has been enjoying quite a massive renaissance within the past decade, and one of the people sitting at the forefront of this massive musical renaissance is Seth Lakeman. His most recent album is known as Poor Man's Heaven, and it recently landed at number 8 in the chats, the pop charts, not the folk charts. He has put traditional folk music up there in the same ranks as some of the hottest pop stars in the industry, which is an extremely remarkable achievement if you consider what it takes to hit the top of the charts these days.

Lakeman says that getting his album to the top of the pop charts was definitely cool, but he attributes it to the fact that folk acoustic music is becoming more excited for the younger crowd. There are plenty of open mic spots in café bars and student unions where this kind of music is being played, meaning that it is finding its way pretty much everywhere. Lakeman isn't specifically saying that it is folk music that is seeing the renaissance at this moment so much as the acoustic aspect of the music. He believes that it is acoustic instruments and acoustic music that have attracted the attention of people for the moment, and people are jumping on the back of folk because folk and acoustic music sort of go hand in hand - But they are all part of the same thing.

Lakeman has definitely had success in this industry. He plays a number of different instruments including the fiddle, the banjo, the guitar, the mandolin and the viola, and he earned a nomination for a Mercury Prize based on his second solo album, which was released as Kitty Jay in the year 2005. His latest and greatest accolade is definitely much more amusing than it is music considering that he failed his A-level as a lad. However it seems that he is going to receive an honorary doctorate degree in music by Plymouth University.

There has been an incredible demand for the unique brand of music that Lakeman is offering, which is like a combination of folk and rock. He has not been playing the regular folk circuit but instead has been playing rock venues and topping pop charts.
