Known primarily as the althorn, the alto horn has a number of names and classifications. The althorn is also regularly known as the tenor horn or the althoorn, and it is classified as an aerophone as well as a brass instrument. There are a number of instruments that are related to the althorn, including the French horn, the Euphonium, the coronet and the baritone horn. This instrument is pitched in E flat and has a gradually widening conical bore. It typically uses a mouthpiece that is deep and resembles a coronet mouthpiece.

The althorn is most commonly used in brass bands, marching bands and other similar ensembles, where as the typical horn tends to take on the corresponding parts within symphonic groupings as well as classical brass-based ensembles. In the United States as well as Germany, the tenor horn name is identical to the baritone horn, the tuba and the euphonium. In order to avoid naming confusion, the instrument is also referred to occasionally as the E-flat horn.

The althorn in E-flat possesses a conical bore that is not unlike the orchestral French horn, played in F. This instrument uses deep cup shaped or funnel shaped mouthpieces depending on which model you are playing. This instrument is regularly used in British based brass bands, and it is also occasionally included in orchestras though its place is also regularly taken up by the orchestral horn instead. You will regularly find this alto horn being used in concert bands, as here it has a very similar status as the traditional horn.

The deep mouthpiece, as well as the conical bore is capable of producing a tone that is mellow and rounded, and therefore it is most often used to serve as a middle voice capable of supporting the trumpets, flugelhorns and cornets and the melodies that they produce. This instrument fills in the gap that is above the lower bass and tenor instruments such as the tuba, the baritone horn, the trombone and the tuba. There are only very occasional solo parts intended for the althorn, and they are usually taken instead by solo horns. Most althorns or alto horns are pitched in E-flat, and they are transposing instruments.

The typical range for this instrument is from the A one octave and a minor third just below the middle C up to the E-flat which is an octave along with a minor third above the middle A, which is A2 to E-flat5. The standard bell up style of horns comes in two different basic but distinctive shapes, one of which begins with the bell that loops up over the top of the valves, and the other which involves the bell looping down below the valves.

Although there is some naming confusion about this particular instrument, what always remains true is that this is an intriguing instrument with a popular sound that finds its way into many brass bands and orchestral arrangements.

Continued from World Horns 101 pt 1

The best known example of the bark bound horn is the Alpine horn or Alphorn, which is the best known and the most engineered. It is a straight and a gradually expanding tube that can be as long as 13 feet or 4 meters long and it curves upwards just before the bell of the instrument. Modern styles of Alpine Horns or Alphorns are typically capable of being dismantled for the purposes of travel, and some of them are even made out of carbon fiber materials.

Didgeridoo

This is a famous instrument that comes from aboriginal Australia. It is made out of a long eucalyptus branch hat has been hollowed out naturally by termites. The end that you blow into is relatively wide and is typically smothered using a coating of beeswax. The player uses what is a relatively sophisticated technique with the use of slack embouchure in order to produce low droning notes, utilizing resonance of the mouth and pulsing his or her breath and adding in all kinds of unique vocal barks and yelps that are capable of intermodulating with the blown sound in order to create unique sounds all while the player is using continuously circular breathing.

Metal Horns

Metal horns are durable and widespread examples of horns that have managed to survive for many years, many of which have survived through an age of antiquity, in fact. Among these metal horns are the Lur, a Scandinavian instrument from the Bronze Age, which is an S-shaped horn that features a disc bell, as well as the Carnyx, which has a mouth piece and an animal headed bell of an otherwise wooden body which comes from the ancient Celts. There are a number of metal horns that are still being played today including ceremonial trumpet instruments that are ornate and straight and played in Tibet as well as Benin.

These horns are capable of ranging greatly in length up to the length of the Alphorn for example. Another example is the Kombu, which is quite similar in nature to the lur, but is C shaped instead. Another example of a Lur like instrument is the Narsiga from India, which is S shaped. The short signal horn that foxhunters use in England is another example, as is the coiled bugle used in military signaling. The entire range off brass covered instruments such as trumpets for example can also fall into this category as well, proving that world horns can evolve into some truly interesting shapes with time.

There are numerous other horn instruments that we will go into in the next entry in this series, including the Cornett from the Renaissance era in Europe and the Serpent, a conically bored instrument with a luscious baritone sound. There are horns to suit all sounds and purposes, crafted from an endless variety of materials including found objects as we touched on earlier.

Virtually any type of tube, some even without having sustained any modification can be used as a music instrument simply by sounding it as a horn. A series of notes can be produced in this way through the use of the harmonic series. Here is a look at some of the world horns that exist and can be used as music instruments accordingly.

Conches

Many of the horns around the world are actually found objects. For example, an animal horn can have its tip cut off and can be used as a musical instrument, or a large shell with a spiral skeleton such as a conch can have the point cut off so that the tube within is exposed to create sound. Cup shaped mouth pieces are often added and fit. Blown conches may not be particularly suited for the playing of tunes, as their use typically has more to do with ritual and signaling, but the conch is still capable of producing sound that can be used in music. In the ceremonies held within Hindu temples within India as well as Tibetan, Nepalese and East Asian Buddhist temples, this concept is often found.

Animal Horns

Most of the wide range of animal horns that are musical and used within Africa have been blown not via the end but rather via a hole that is cut into the side of the instrument. This particular approach is designed to give the maker a greater amount of control over the size as well as the shape of the embouchure without having to rely on the diameter of the tube. Some animal horns, with an example being the bukkehorn from a goat or a cow, are drilled to supply finger holes for the person playing the instrument to use. Accurate pitching is often difficult when the animal horn is short and does not allow for many finger holes or much space through which sound and air can travel.

Bark-Bound Horns

Most of the horns of the world, unlike those which are found, are actually crafted or made in some way. The simplest horn, perhaps, is a horn that is a spiral made out of birch bark that is pegged at its wide end in order to prevent it from unraveling, or perhaps a branch that is split, with a bore and a cup for the mouth hollowed out of the branch, and then two halves put back together with glue and bound using birch bark. Bark bound wooden horns and other instruments have been played up to the twentieth century and especially by herders in the Nordic countries as well as European mountain areas and in Russia. Many of these horns are of a great length, because longer horns translated into higher harmonic capabilities. Because they are closer together in terms of pitch, these higher harmonics are more than capable of producing a much more capable scale than other and cruder forms of horn making.

Some of these instruments are common place in the United States and others have a decidedly more worldly origin.

Native American Flutes

Native American flutes are flutes that have been around for quite a very long time. The Native American flute is capable of producing a sound that is distinctive in its softness.

Harmonium

The Harmonium was introduced to India by the British during the Colonial period. Indian cultures quickly adopted this unique instrument. The harmonium falls into the family of free reed types of aerophones. They resemble small organs that are the size of a tabletop. Each unique harmonium possesses a bellows at its back, and this is pumped by one of the player's hands while the player uses the other hand to play the keyboard. The most common position for playing the harmonium is to place the instrument on the floor, sitting with crossed legs in front of it. The keys can be played using your dominant hand while the other hand works the bellows. The right hand is the most common hand to play the keys.

Hunting Horn

The hunting horn is an instrument that is commonly used when it comes to fox hunting in order to announce the position of a hunter as well as to signal to the hunting dogs. The hunting horn is one of many different types of bugles.

Ocarina

The original Ocarina is the ceramic Ocarina, and this type of Ocarina is estimated to be more than 12,000 years in age. Ancient examples of this instrument have been cited, as small whistles that are shaped in the form of birds and other wild animals. In India, these small whistles were made from terracotta. Another country where Ocarinas have been common throughout history is in China, where song and dance incorporating the Ocarina has been dated back as far as 5,000 to 6,000 years.

Shvi

The Shvi is essentially a whistle of Armenian descent. It is a flute-type of instrument and it is capable of producing between one and a half and two octaves out of the chromatic scale of music. The lower octave is typically attained by way of blowing normally into the instrument's mouthpiece, while the upper octave on the other hand is attained by way of blowing even harder. The instrument's lower octave is capable of creating soft and recorder-like tones while the upper octave has a more powerful and birdlike shrill sound to it that is similar to the flute or the piccolo. This instrument is actually best known for the ability that it has to mimic many different bird calls.

Here is a guide to some of the more common and more interesting wind instruments. Some of these instruments are common place in the United States and others have a decidedly more worldly origin.

Bugle

The bugle is a type of wind instrument that does not actually contain any valves or any slides. The tones achieved with this instrument are achieved by way of changing the mouth position as well as by increasing how much wind is passing through the instrument. The bugle is a basis foundation for many other types of wind instruments and it is a wonderful way to learn how to control the different mouth positions which become really useful when it comes to playing other types of wind instruments as well.

Bulb Horn

This instrument is typically used in order to get the attention of people. There are a wide variety of different shapes that the bulb horn is capable of taking, and there are also replacement bulbs as well as replacement reeds that can be purchased in order to fulfill a number of different purposes.

Didgeridoo

The Didgeridoo is a wind instrument that was originally developed more than 1,500 years ago by the indigenous Australians in northern Australia. It is still used across the globe as well as in Australia, and has many names. It is sometimes regarded as being a drone pipe or a wooden trumpet, and it has been classified as being an aerophone. Some people believe that this instrument is the oldest wind instrument in the entire world, and it may be capable of dating as far back as 20,000 BC.

Playing this instrument involves blowing into a long mouthpiece while you create a buzzing sound using your lips. By circular breathing you can continually blow the air from your mouth without ever having to stop for breath while you are playing this unique instrument. This is a technique that makes it possible for you to blow out an uninterrupted drone because you can both inhale and exhale at the exact same time, but it does take some practice for you to achieve this.

Duduk

The Duduk is an Armenian-based wind instrument that has sound qualities that are not unlike those produced by the clarinet. This is one of the oldest known double reed instruments in the entire world. It is capable of producing a very wide range of different melodies, and this includes rhythmic and dance tunes. The duduk is an instrument that has truly become essential in the every day lives of Armenians. There are both beginner style duduks and professional style instruments as well. There are a number of other instruments of Armenian origin out there as well including the Shvi and the Bloul.
