Action - This is a term that is used to describe how a musical instrument plays. The use of this term is highly varied within the industry, but the general sense that it refers to is the playability of the instrument or how well it functions on a mechanical level.

Alnico - This is a compound word that is drawn from three; Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt. AlNiCo is a powerful and permanent magnet alloy that contains iron, aluminum and nickel as well as either cobalt, copper or titanium. These magnets are especially useful in loudspeaker construction.

Amplifier - An instrument amplifier is an electronic amplifier that is designed to amplify the sound of an electric instrument such as a guitar or a piano or keyboard.

Anti Node - This is the opposite of a node that occurs when standing waves occur in positions in space that are relative to the wave where there is no movement at all.

Backline - This is a general term that is used to include all of the necessary band gear, including the instruments such as guitar and bass, amplifiers, drums, cables and microphone stands including anything else that is necessary.

Balanced - When it comes to audio, balances is the opposite of unbalanced. When it comes to the acoustic guitar, balanced refers to an AC electrical signal that has two legs in dependent of the ground.

Barre Chord - The barre chord, which is derived from the French term barre, is a specific guitar playing technique involving placing the left hand index finger over between two and six strings when fingering a chord. The advantage to playing chords is this manner is that they behave as moveable shapes that can be applied at the point of nearly any fret.

Bass - This is the lowest pitched part of any musical work. The word bass is derived from the Latin bassus, which specifically means thick or low. The bass is the lowest range of the male voice and also describes musical instruments that play lower octaves in the musical spectrum.

Bleed - When it comes to audio, bleed is characterized by the leakage of one audio source output into the audio output from another source, which can happen on stage or even in the studio depending on the equipment used.

Bolt on Neck - A guitar neck referred to as a bolt on neck is one that is secured to the body of the guitar by way of a series of either bolts or wooden screws. This term is nearly always applied specifically to solid body guitars.

Bridge - This is a part of a stringed acoustic instrument such as a guitar or bass that is found at the opposite end of the nut on the body of the guitar. The bridge has numerous functions including holding the strings in place and also transmitting their vibrations up to the top of the instrument to its soundboard.

Capo - Short for capotasto, a Capo is a moveable bar that is attached to the finger board of any fretted instrument which allows the pitch of all of the strings to be uniformly raised.

Compensation - When it comes to the guitar, compensation refers to the increase in the tension of the string which occurs when a string is pressed down to the fret board. This causes the fretted note to be slightly sharper in comparison to the open string note.

Compressor - Compressors are devices that reduce the dynamic range of audio signals after first establishing a threshold.

Damping - When it comes to physics, damping relates to the decrease in the amplitude of a wave, whether it is represented mechanically or electrically. In acoustic instruments the mechanical context is that which is referred to when the vibration of strings on a guitar, bass, piano or similar instrument is dampened or reduced.

Dreadnought - This is a word that was once used to describe large-sized acoustic guitars that offered formidable volume in conjunction with booming bass sound.

Fingerboard - This is a thin piece of wood that forms the guitar neck's smooth playing surface on stringed musical instruments like the violin, the guitar and the bass, against which the strings are pressed when the instrument is played. Some fingerboards are fretless, such as with the violin, while others are fretted, such as with guitars, banjos and other similar instruments. Fingerboards are most commonly constructed from wood like ebony and rosewood or other dark woods like maple.

Fret - This is a bar or a ridge that is usually made of metal and stretches across the fingerboard or the neck of a musical instrument. When the string is stopped or pressed by a finger at the point of the metal bar, a note of the desired pitch will be produced.

Half Step - A half step is the smallest commonly used musical distinction interval in most forms of western music. Octaves are divided into twelve of these intervals.

Harmonic - In audio, a harmonic is the opposite of a fundamental. Harmonics are waveforms that are multiples of their fundamental frequencies.

Headstock - This is the part of the guitar at the other end from the body. The headstock is used to support the mechanical assemblies that are used to wind the strings on the instrument, although sometimes the winding is done at the bridge of the guitar.

Hi-Z - This refers to high impedance.

Hum - The hum is a low pitched noise that is undesired when it can be heard in an audio signal.

Humbucker - This is a type of guitar pickup that sports two coils of wire and two magnets, rather than a traditional single coil pickup. The humbucker was designed so that the two coils of wire are out of polarity with one another, and each is wound around a magnet featuring an opposite polarity.

Acoustic musical instruments are musical instruments that are capable of creating sounds entirely via acoustic means as opposed to by way of electronic means. Before electronic instruments came along, there was no need to define instruments as being acoustic as every instrument was acoustic by nature. Acoustic music, or generally anything with acoustic placed in front of it, is actually a “retronym”, based on the previous statement that before electric instruments came along, instruments were simply called by their name. The guitar is one example of this, but is not the only instance of this particular situation. Before electric guitars, the “acoustic” guitar was just simply a guitar.

In contrast, electric, or electronic, instruments can only be heard if they are plugged into an amplifier. Such instruments would include electric guitars (bass and regular), synthesizers, electric organs, keyboards, and a myriad of other instruments as well.

Now, an instrument being acoustic does not mean that it cannot be amplified by electronic means. It simply needs to make its sound without the need for electronic amplification in order to qualify as an acoustic musical instrument. A good example of this is the acoustic guitar. Many people have ways of hooking their acoustic guitars up to an amplifier to play for larger crowds by creating a larger sound. This usually involves a miniature microphone, which would be installed inside the body of the acoustic guitar. This microphone would then send the sound created by it to the amplifier. Some acoustic guitars will have pickups similar to what an electric guitar has instead, as the means of producing sound over the amplifier.

Either way, the guitar is still primarily an acoustic musical instrument by nature as it can operate perfectly even if it was not connected to an amplifier. One other way of reproducing sound from an acoustic guitar without actually having anything hooked up to it is to put a stage microphone very close to the opening of the guitar body, so that the sounds created may be picked up and amplified for easier listening. This would be the most natural way to create such a level of amplification, but it would also be the least accurate of option available to you. This is because the microphone is further away from the source of the sound, and therefore is going to be much more susceptible to outside noise.

A good example of such amplified acoustic music would be MTV’s “Unplugged” series from the 1990s. Various artists would perform their songs on stage using only their acoustic musical instruments, but most of the instruments were indeed amplified by some means. The acoustic guitar presents a sound that is unique in comparison to the electric guitar, even when the acoustic guitar's music is being amplified, and this is why many artists prefer to play the acoustic guitar even when amplification is necessary in order for the guitar's sound to be heard.

Interval - An interval is described as a difference in pitch from one tone to another, and intervals are most commonly measured as the difference between the lower tone and the higher tone.

Intonation - Intonation, in its most literal form, means either pitch or using pitch. One who speaks with intonation uses pitch variation to convey meaning. With music, describing pitch takes on a much more connotative meaning.

Jack - A jack is essentially the opposite of a plug, and in most cases is the part of the cord that plugs in to the musical instrument.

Machine Head - The machine head, at least when it comes to guitars and similar instruments, is the mechanism that is found at the headstock and that is responsible for tightening or loosening the strings gradually, allowing for them to be accurately tuned. This is achieved by a gear mechanism built in to the instrument's machine head.

MI - MI is a commonly used abbreviation for musical instrument, and is a broad term that is used to describe the musical instrument marketplace as a whole. In other words, terms like "MI market" and "MI store" are often used for this purpose.

Neck Through Body - This describes a neck joint that is used exclusively in semi-solid and solid body guitars, where the neck is an integral part of the body of the guitar, spanning the entire length of the instrument from the strap button on the bottom of the guitar to the headstock at the top of the neck.

Parameter - This is a factor determining a range of variables. There are many instances where parameters play a role in music.

Pick Guard - This is a device that is applied to the surface of a stringed instrument such as a guitar or bass in order to protect its finish from scratches that may occur when a pick scrapes across the top of the instrument during play.

Power Chord - A power chord is an interval that serves as a function of a major or a minor chord, consisting of only three pitches with one which is doubled at the octave level. Power chords are especially popular in rock music, punk music, hard rock ad metal.

Scale Length - In stringed instruments, the scale length is the distance between the nut and the bridge or the saddle, comprised of the total length of the vibrating portion of whatever string is being played or plucked in instruments like the guitar, the bass and the banjo.

Solid Body Guitar - This is one version of a guitar that is described as a guitar made from solid wood without any resonating airspaces within it, such as with an electric guitar.
