The violin is a bowed, stringed musical instrument with a total of four tuned strings that can be played. The violin consists of a bridge, a peg box, a sound post, a chin rest, a tail piece, a finger board, a bass bar, sound holes and a back piece. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions relating to the violin, and the answers to those questions accordingly.

1 - Who were the greatest violin makers in the history of the instrument?

A - Some of the most well known violin makers include Andrea Amati, Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri, Gasparo da Salò, Jacon Stainer of Absam and Giovanni Maggini.

2 - What instruments are included within the violin family?

A - The violin family of instruments was originally developed in Italy during the seventeenth century. The violin family consists of a number of different acoustic instruments including the violin, the viola, the cello and the bass viol. Among the different members included within this family, the violin is considered to be the king of all musical instruments.

3 - What are the different types of violins?

A - Basically, violins are classified into one of two different categories; electric violins and non-electric or acoustic violins. Acoustic violins are the traditional violins, which are suited best for novices. These violins have the highest tune, and they are considered the smallest among all of the instruments in the violin family. An electric violin on the other hand uses an electronic output signal, and is ideal for more advanced players. Compared to the non electric violin or the acoustic violin, the sound of an electrical violin is certainly much sharper. Violins are also classified according to their era or period, such as the modern violin, the classical violin and the baroque violin.

4 - What are the typical materials that are used in the creation of a traditional violin?

A - The body of the violin can be constructed from a number of different types of wood, including but not limited to maple, cedar, silver oak, spruce, sycamore and others.

5 - Are there different sizes of violins available on the market?

A - Yes, the violin is considered to be one of the most user friendly acoustic musical instruments because these instruments come in a number of different sizes, including full size, and then 1/16 size, 1/10 size, 1/8 size, ¼ size, ½ size, ¾ size and 4/4 size.

6 - How much is a good quality violin going to cost?

A - Violins definitely are available in a wide variety of different price ranges. The price of a violin is going to depend on a number of factors, including the age of the player, the skill level and the reputation of the maker, as well as the utilitarian value of the instrument. Reasonable, good quality violins including their case, their bow and the rosin can generally be purchased for between $100 and $3000 dollars.

While few people can name a double bass player (though many can name a bass guitar player) some bassists actually break out and perform solo bass. Some even go on to record an entire album of solo bass, like double bassist Mike Milligan. When many people think of a bass, they think of type of guitar rather than the grand double bass. A double bass is the large instrument that sits on the ground while the musician sits in a chair behind it, and almost seems wrapped around the instrument as he or she plays. Not a terribly popular instrument in the rock bands of today, the double bass actually is used in some popular music, and is a crucial instrument in orchestral music. And some musicians make its solo sound something to truly celebrate.

Mike Milligan is a double bassist from Canada who has performed in large groups, trios, and extensive solo performances. He was a first-place semi-finalist at the 1986 Montreal Jazz Festival, and won grants to compose music for the bass as well as study with prestigious instructors. Not only has he won first prize in the Vienna Jazz Festival, a large and prestigious international competition held yearly in France, but he's done something few other double bassists ever do, whether they play jazz or classical music. He released a solo bass CD in 1997 to both critical and fan acclaim.

Mike studied double bass with masters like Dave Holland and George Mraz and has performed with internationally known artists like Chet Baker, David Liebman, Sonny Greenwich, Billy Kilson, Jeff Ballard and scores of others. He's gone on tour with the group “Shuffle Demons” giving dozens of well-received performances across Canada and Europe, and took place as part of the house band in 2005 and 2006 at the Ottawa Jazz Festival.

Unlike many other double bassists, Mike also plans to release a second CD. He regularly performs in various trios and small groups across Toronto, all while privately teaching double bass along with electric bass and jazz techniques and improvisation from his music studio in Toronto. Because performing an entire album of solo bass music is a challenge for any bassist, performing one that's also hailed by critics and jazz aficionados, and plan another, is a doubly-impressive feat.

To prepare for recording the album, Mike again ventured into mostly untapped territory for the bassist—solo performances. He gave several entire concerts featuring nothing but his solo bass music, some of it composed by him and some of it improvised in his unique jazz style. Mike uses a late 1950's German double bass that's hand-carved with a solid top and back and heavy gauge D'Addario Heliocore Double Bass strings. Given the fine instrument, Mike's extensive performing experience and innovative techniques for bring more to the performance of the double bass, his new CD looks to be as good as his last. His CD is called “Solo Flights,” and will enhance your appreciation of the jazz bass sound.

Buying a stand up bass can be difficult because there is no standard set of specifications designed for stand up bass instruments. For this reason, you can find stand up bass instruments in a variety of different sizes and shapes. When you find stand up basses offering higher prices, this is reflective of their antique value or nostalgic value rather than having anything to with the quality of craftsmanship or the materials used in the instrument. Because the world of the stand up bass is a completely unorganized and unplanned one, choosing the right stand up bass will have more to do with your own ear for music above all else.

There are numerous different parts of the stand up bass that play a part in choosing the right stand up bass for you. The bridge supports the strings, and is responsible for transferring the vibrations from the strings to the body of the stand up bass instrument. The F Hole is an F-shaped hole allowing sound to escape out of the body. The Tuning Pegs are responsible for making the strings either longer or shorter in order to tune the sound coming from the stand up bass. The tail spike, finally, allows the player to balance his or her bow on the floor in between his or her legs.

There are a few different things that you need to be aware of when it comes to buying a stand up bass. Before you do anything, you should take the time to put together a budget for yourself. This way you can buy the best sounding stand up bass that falls within your budget without risking going over in price and regretting it later. This is going to make sure that you get the absolute best stand up bass that your money will allow.

Although there are no real specifications in terms of size, there are two variations which are more common than others, full sized and fractional sizes. Fractional double basses usually come with ¾ and half sized necks in comparison to standard necks. They make ideal instruments for younger students with smaller hands or shorter arms. As you move on, you can eventually purchase a larger stand up bass until you are comfortable with a full sized stand up bass. Make sure to talk to a professional like a teacher or the owner of a local retail outlet to find out which size is best for you.

The best way to choose the ideal stand up bass for your needs is to try out a bunch of different options and choose the one that best suits you. This will give you the opportunity to get a feel for what is available in your price range. Try bringing a professional instructor with you to help you choose the right stand up bass for your needs as they can give helpful pointers to help you make educated decisions about your purchase.

The bass is also known as the double bass or the doghouse, and it is both the largest as well as the lowest pitch instrument in the violin family. Just like the violin, the double bass instrument evolved from the viol in Europe.

Fine bass models are made out of solid spruce wood for the front of the instrument, solid maple wood for the back, the sides and the neck of the instrument and either boxwood, rosewood or ebony wood for the tailpiece, the fingerboard and the tuning pegs. Both the front of the instrument and the back of the instrument are carved into a shape that is similar to a shallow bowl. The front and the back plates of this instrument have to confirm to an exact specification for thickness in order for the instrument to perform the way that it was created to.

Carved solid wood types of instruments typically are capable of creating a richer tone, but they also tend to be significantly more expensive in comparison to instruments with carved spruce tops and sides and backs that are made using a high quality plywood that has been molded into the appropriate shape. There are also bass instruments that are even less expensive in cost, and these are instruments that entirely consist of a high grade plywood material that has been molded into the appropriate shape.

Bass strings are typically made out of fine metal wire that has been wrapped around either silk or a polymer thread. The string type for each bass is going to depend on whatever music the bassist is interested in playing. The strings are responsible for fastening to a tailpiece, and then they pass over the bridge, which is a carved piece of good that is typically made from a very dense type of maple. Then the strings pass over the nut, a raised part of the fingerboard located at the instrument's scroll, or head. From there, the strings next pass into the instrument's peg box and this is where the strings are tuned by way of either wooden pegs or metal screws.

The full size bass is approximately 5 feet tall, and it has four strings, which are numbered from one to four. The first string is the string that is the furthest from the person playing the instrument. There are also 5 string and 5 string varieties of the stand up bass which were develop to expand the number of different notes that a bassist can reasonably play using their instrument. Bassists use their right hand in order to pluck at and to bow the strings. In jazz and bluegrass music, the bass is used almost exclusively by way of plucking rather than bowing. It is up to the player whether they pluck or bow the strings, but both choices do have an impact on the music that results.
