When purchasing a Dobro acoustic musical instrument, there are four primary considerations that you need to be able to make:

- First, you have to consider your budget needs.

If you have an unlimited budget when you set out to purchase the perfect Dobro instrument, then American versions are the ideal way to go simply based on quality craftsmanship alone. If your budget is a little tighter, which it more than likely is, then what you need to consider instead is an import version, which may be less high quality, but still a good instrument.

- The second consideration that you need to make has to do with the investment value.

For example, many foreign Dobro brands do not have has high of a resell value as American makes do. Most American makes naturally have a very high resell value which means you can sell your instrument and make quite a bit of money back if it is an American model but not necessarily if it is a foreign model or import.

- The third consideration that you need to make is the quality of the materials in the Dobro musical instrument that you purchase.

There are a lot of intricate pieces that go into the construction of a high quality Dobro instrument, and you are going to want these intricate pieces to be of the highest possible quality as well. Take the time to get to know any Dobro that you consider buying. Look for spun cones and metal parts that seem durable and long lasting. Appraise the quality of the Dobro as you look it over. Do you think it will give you many excellent years, or that it will begin to warp or play poorly after only a few months?

- The fourth and final consideration to make when buying a Dobro is the craftsmanship.

American makes are still ahead of the foreign import Dobro musical instruments, so if you are looking for the highest level of quality craftsmanship available, buy local. However, foreign imports are gaining ground as they become sturdier, more soundly built and crafted from higher quality materials, so if you want to go with a more inexpensive, potentially not quite as sturdy instrument, the craftsmanship offered by many foreign import Dobro craftsmen is not completely off the table as an option.
