The keyword on a clarinet is either played using silver or nickel. On a rare occasion, gold may be used for the key work on the clarinet. Nickel plating is durable, and it does not tarnish near as easily as silver. Nickel plating is also preferred in many occasions because it has a luster that is shiny and attractive. Silver plating is attractive and offers an appearance that is warm and brilliant, and it also has a nice feel to the touch. Unfortunately, silver plating on a clarinet's key work can tarnish easily in comparison to nickel plating. With care, silver played keys can remain nicely free of tarnish, retaining their natural beauty all throughout the life of the instrument.

Clarinets come in several different styles based on the size of their bores. The bore of the clarinet is the inside of the instrument. In general, clarinets will smaller bores are ideal for students to play in tune, as it is easier for them to cover the holes with their fingers. Clarinets with larger bores tend to be much more flexible in terms of pitch, and so they are preferable among jazz players that are looking to bend notes, producing a much bigger sound that can project adequately in any setting, even one filled with numerous other instruments and plenty of noise.

Breaking in a Wood Clarinet

A brand new clarinet, or one that has been unused and stored for a long period of time will need to be acclimated in order to protect it from cracking. There are two specific rules of thumb that need to be followed when you are taking care of your granadilla wood clarinet.

The first rule is not to keep your wood instrument in any place where you would not keep a baby. Would you leave a baby in a car during a hot afternoon, or out in the cold at night? No, so do not do either of these things with your cherished wooden clarinet either.

The second rule is to always store your clarinet in its case when it is not in use.

Grenadilla clarinets also have to be broken in before they can be played for extended periods of time. Do not play your new clarinet for longer than fifteen minutes per day for the first week, and make sure to swab the bore out carefully to remove any lingering moisture after each use. The second week, you can play for thirty minutes per day for the week, and you can extend this play time to 45 minutes for the third week. Make sure to swab the bore out after you play each day to keep your clarinet in top shape. During the fourth week, you can push your playing time to an hour, and your clarinet should be broken in by the end of the fourth week. If you live in dryer climates, more care may be required to keep your clarinet in fighting shape.

Purchasing a brand new clarinet, regardless of whether it is your first or an attempt to step up to a newer instrument, is a very large decision that involves many different facets that need to be considered. The clarinet family includes a number of different models, including a contra alto model and a bass model. The most popular model of the clarinet, however, is a Bb clarinet. This is the most popular form of the clarinet, and it is utilized for a variety of different styles of music ranging from marching tunes to Mozart, and this type of clarinet is also prominent in swing music, jazz music and Dixieland music as well. The Bb clarinet is useful in solo playing and ensemble music alike, and it can also be an excellent crossover instrument, meaning that people who learn how to play the clarinet can move on to play the saxophone or the flute later on in life.

The ideal clarinet tone is one that is dark, rich and focused, offering a fundamental and pleasant mix both of lower and higher overtones. The absence or presence of overtones is where personal taste really comes into account, but still, a clarinet should always be used to produce a fundamental tone that is both centered and smooth. Clarinets are designed to deliver a fundamental tone.

There are five different, separate parts of the clarinet that are assembled separately and then combined to make up the instrument as a hole. The mouthpiece is the thinner part of the clarinet, followed by the barrel, then the upper joint, then the lower joint, then the bell. Clarinets are most typically divided into three different categories or levels. The first category is for student clarinets, the second is for intermediate level clarinets, and the third and final category is for professional clarinets. Clarinets are most commonly comprised of one of two different materials, either plastic or wood. The type of plastic that is used in clarinets was specifically designed for musical instrument use. The benefit that comes from using this type of plastic relates to forgiving ruggedness that is typical of plastic, while still possessing certain musical characteristics, allowing for it to sound like a wood clarinet would. The majority of clarinets that are crafted from plastic are entry level or student level clarinets.

The wood material that is traditionally used for the composition of clarinets is granadilla wood, and this type of clarinet is preferred by professionals and advanced level students because it offers the unmistakable sound and the unmistakable resonance that only a high quality wood clarinet can produce. The one drawback to a wood clarinet is that it requires a certain level of care and maintenance in order to ensure that it enjoys a long life, and most new students are not disciplined enough to offer this level of care. Offering air moisture is absolutely crucial to maintaining the health of a clarinet crafted from granadilla.

The study of the clarinet can begin as soon as age eleven or twelve, which is the age when the second teeth have become well established. A great way to significantly enhance early progress with this instrument is to have prior experience with the basics of music including notation, basic coordination, rhythm and concentration.

In order for a clarinet student to develop good playing habits initially, certain skills are necessary including learning how to shape and to control the mouth muscles, learning where to place the fingers and learning how to place the reed on the mouthpiece. It is greatly recommended that interested students pursue individual, private lessons so that they will get the individual attention that they need in addition to class lessons where they can obtain ensemble experience.

These two different types of learning environments are capable of complementing one another quite ideally. Students should be practicing at a minimum of thirty minutes a day just for individual practice. In the beginning of learning, the best way to handle this practice period is by breaking it up to two or three different periods of fifteen minutes.. Excessive levels of practice that push beyond the mouth muscle's capabilities are more likely to develop bad habits rather than benefit the player in any way.

Investing in a good mouthpiece when you are a beginning player is extremely important. The mouthpieces that are furnished when the instrument is intended for beginners are not typically going to be ideal. Poorly designed mouthpieces and damaged mouthpieces are capable of completely defeating the player's effort to play well.

Students need to learn about the proper keeping and care of their instruments, their reeds and their mouthpieces early on. The mouthpiece and the reed need to be cleaned following every playing session and the clarinet should be swabbed before it is put away in the case.

There are a wide variety of different private study clarinet methods and class clarinet methods that are available for students that are just starting out. Personal preference is going to vary largely in this department. The class and the band methods that are used by most clarinet schools will be compatible for the methods that are designed to suit privacy study almost simultaneously.

Technique basics: Student should know:

The chromatic fingerings from the low E to high F, including alternative fingerings for a total of 38 notes,

Just like beginning with any acoustic musical instrument, beginning the clarinet is a learning process that is going to involve both a great amount of achievement, and also the occasional setback. However, if the beginning clarinet player, or clarinetist, follows a few basic tips relating to proper clarinet playing and clarinet care, then the number of successes will surely outweigh the number of setbacks.

The first thing that a new clarinet player is going to need to learn is how to properly put their instrument together, and exactly how it should be held. One of the important things to note when putting a clarinet together is that you should not force one part into another. It is also important to know that the side level is up when the lower and upper parts are combined together, otherwise you could end up bending the keys as a result.

This type of proper care absolutely must be extended to all of the parts of the clarinet. While it is inevitable that the reeds of the instrument will eventually split with time, they will last much longer if you offer them careful and continued care. The clarinet itself will last significantly longer, and will have much less of a need for repair if you choose to look after it properly. Looking after your clarinet consistently and properly includes cleaning your clarinet every time you play it, and making sure that it finds its way back into its case after every use as well.

One of the most difficult things for the average beginning clarinet player to master is getting the embouchure correct. The embouchure is described as how the lips are shaped in order to properly hold the mouthpiece, and in order to create the correct level of vibration in the reed. You are going to want to make sure that your bottom teeth are being covered by your bottom lip, and that your top teeth are touching the mouth piece, but just lightly without clamping down too tightly on it. It is normal for a beginning clarinet player to experience a fair bit of squeaking. As you continue to learn, and continue to practice your clarinet playing and your embouchure, this annoying aspect of the beginnings of clarinet playing will disappear, but it will take time.

The clarinet is a unique instrument that can provide a great deal of potential for anyone who endeavors to play it, but it does take some time, energy and patience in order to get it right. New and beginner clarinet players should not feel discouraged if they cannot hold their clarinet correctly at first, nor should they fret if they summon a squeaky sound often while playing. The true key to proper clarinet playing is to practice as often as possible, because practice makes perfect. And as long as you properly maintain your clarinet by keeping it clean and keeping it safely housed in its case after use, your clarinet will give you a long life and plenty of musical enjoyment.
