It can be used as an entry into a band, or perhaps even becoming a singer. When you first feel the interest in playing guitar, it is best to get a beginner's guitar that is inexpensive. Then you just have to follow these steps to find the guitar that is right for you.

Step #1 - The first thing that you are going to want to do is to determine what your budget is. When you are just getting started, you should be trying to keep your budget relatively low. You should not be spending more than $200 to $300 for a basic guitar. Another option that is available to you is to buy a used guitar. You may want to consider checking around local pawn shops as well as used guitar and musical instrument dealers. Expensive guitars are not necessarily good guitars. Inexpensive guitars are not always cheaply made, but some are, so make sure that you shop around to find the best value, not just the best deal.

Step #2 - The next step is going to be to do some research. Find someone that you know that has been playing the guitar for a while and solicit some advice on brands and types for guitars that you should be looking for or avoiding. For example, very high quality and well known brands that are worth pursuing include Gibson, Martin, Taylor and Fender just to name a few.

Step #3 - Now you will want to decide what actual type of guitar you are going to want to play. Examples include standard acoustic or classical acoustic, for example. It is really all going to depend on what type of music you are interested in playing.

Step #4 - Now you should take your guitar-playing friend with you to several music shops to get help. As a beginning, you may not be able to recognize certain subtle qualities of tone that your friend may be able to pick up, meaning that their help will be indispensible. This is probably one of the best possible things that you can do to make sure that you get the right guitar.

Step #5 - Don't be afraid to talk to the clerk. Ask the clerk for a strap and a pick and don't be afraid to try out guitars at all ends of your price range. You also want to have the sales clerk verify that the guitar has been tuned correctly, either to standard pitch or to concert pitch. This is going to allow you to compare the guitar with the others in the shop more effectively. Don't be afraid to ask questions of the clerks in the store to get a better feel for what is being offered. This is the best way to get results when shopping for a good guitar.

When it comes to shopping for a child size guitar for example, it can not be over emphasized how important it is to consider neck size and the overall size of the guitar to suit its player. Learning to play using the wrong acoustic guitar can lead to frustration during the lessons, slow progress and even the development of poor quality techniques. The guitar is an easy instrument to play, so there is no reason for this to happen provided that the right guitar is chosen for practice.

1/4 size guitars are ideal for ages four to six, or players with heights of 3'3" to 3'9". 1/2 size guitars are most ideal for ages five to eight or players with heights of 3'10" to 4'5". 3/4 size guitars are most ideal for ages eight to eleven or players with heights of 4'6" to 4'11". Finally a 4/4 size acoustic guitar is ideal for ages eleven and up, and players with heights that are 5' and taller. The overall length of the guitar itself is not a good indicator of whether or not it is the correct size for the individual student in question. The only way to determine the true size of a particular acoustic guitar is to measure what is known as its "scale length". A guitar's scale length is measured from its bridge to the nut. In other words, the scale length measurement is measuring the part of the strings that are actually vibrating any time a string is plucked.

To determine the proper size of an acoustic guitar when shopping for a child size guitar, use the following measurements.

- 24.75" or 25.5" is a 4/4 size guitar.
- 22.75" is a 3/4 size guitar.
- 20.5" is a 1/2 size guitar.
- 19" is a 1/4 size guitar.

The overall length of a guitar can actually vary widely depending on its individual style and design. Most knowledgeable guitar dealers will list the guitar based on the 4/4, 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 sizes, and most will also make sure that the actual scale length itself is included in the instrument's measurement.

Larger is generally better, especially when shopping for a child who is on the border between one size and another in terms of their age or their height. This is because they will probably have grown into the larger guitar within a few weeks or months, so buying a smaller guitar is simply a waste of money. You should also consider that children with longer arms may require a larger guitar. There is no problem with a child learning to play on a guitar that is somewhat larger than recommended, however it is much easier for a child to learn on a guitar that is properly sized for him or her.

Another consideration that you may want to make is the neck width. This is not essential by any means, but if you are looking for the perfect guitar for a child, you should consider the neck's width at the nut. This will allow you to compare the fret board width for different guitars on the market.

What style interests you?

Are you interested in playing rock and roll music, or jazz? Are you interested in playing bluegrass music or classical? Are you interested in playing contemporary Spanish or Folk? Considering your own personal tastes can help you determine which type of guitar will best suit your needs. A Spanish style guitar will not be best suited for rock and roll, and an Electric guitar is not going to deliver the best Classical sound, after all.

What is your current experience level?

Classical and electric guitars tend to be the best for beginners because they are easier on the fingers. Students with smaller hands may be better suited for electric, however, because the classical guitar has a much wider neck. When buying a guitar based on your experience level, make sure that you intend to continue playing in the same style that you have previously played in.

How does the guitar feel in your hands?

If you do not feel comfortable holding the guitar or wearing it against your body with a strap, then it isn't the right guitar for you. Choose a guitar that you feel comfortable with; otherwise you will have no interest in playing your recent purchase.

How much money are you willing to spend?

If you are just getting started, don't buy an expensive guitar. Wait until you know whether or not you intend to stick with this hobby, because the highest quality guitars can easily become quite pricey. They are well worth the price paid for them, for sure, but only if you intend to continue playing the guitar long after you purchase this brand new instrument. Keep in mind that you can always upgrade your guitar later if you decide to stick to the hobby, and that there is nothing wrong with playing a lower quality instrument when you are just getting into the hobby.

Acoustic Musical Gear

The most obvious piece of acoustic musical gear is the instruments themselves. Acoustic musical instruments can be used without any external electrical assistant. Acoustic guitars, flutes, violins, acoustic drums, cellos, violas and acoustic bass are all examples of acoustic music instruments. Not only do these instruments work as they should without electrical assistance, but the gear associated them is also designed in such a way that it can operate acoustically.

Some acoustic musical gear is designed to be capable of being used as electronic music instrument gear as well. You can add pick ups to acoustic guitars for example, in order to play them electrically. This way, amplifiers can be used to change the sound of the acoustic guitar, allowing the sound to be heard through the amplifier as well as through the guitar itself.

Simply adding pick ups to an acoustic musical instrument are not as easy as it sounds, however. You cannot simply add a pick up to an ordinary acoustic guitar and expect for it to sound just like an ordinary electric guitar. Pick ups are only designed to pave the way to amplifying the sound, but they are not capable of changing the tone of the sound or the effect of the sound. In other words, acoustic guitars and electric guitars are always going to sound different even when they are both being amplified electronically.

Although both are types of guitars and the playing of both guitars is the same, these two types of guitars are far from being the same. They have many different aspects that make them unique. You should not, therefore, mix up the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar, or any other acoustic and electric instruments for that matter. Each instrument that has an acoustic counterpart and an electric one offers unique differences between the two in clarity of sound, quality of sound, tone and style.

Although there are acoustic instruments that are capable of being played electrically with the right equipment, there is not a single electrical instrument that can be effectively played acoustically because electric connection is required in order for the instruments to be plaid correctly. For electric instruments, amplifiers and microphones are important accessories because they allow for the sound of the instrument to be heard. Without these amplifiers, the sound produced by the instrument is faint and barely audible.

However, this task can be much easier if you do some research ahead of time. The following are some points to remember when buying a new or used violin.

If you are purchasing the violin for your child, it may be more economical to rent instead of buying it outright. This is especially true for smaller children who will outgrow their initial instrument. Violins are available in quarter sizes, from 1/4 to the full adult size of 4/4. The major differences between professional and student violins are the amount of labor that goes into them and the quality of the wood used in construction. Professional violins are hand-carved from the highest-quality woods, hand-varnished, and meticulously set up. Student, or beginner, violins are machine manufactured with average wood, finished with a machine-sprayed lacquer, and set up with far less options, if they are even set up at all.

The wood used in construction determines the sound of the violin. The majority of violins on the market have a spruce top and maple back, neck, and sides. The price difference is usually based on the variation in quality of the wood. This difference can be vast-for good reason. The best wood for a particular violin will be flamed or quilted for beauty, aged over 200 years, and stored for another 20 years or so.

There are also a variety of woods used for the fittings of the violin. Look at the materials used for the tuning pegs, endpins, and chin rest. Ebony is usually the best option for fittings, but boxwood is also used, and some violins may have alloy tailpieces with built-in tuners. You may find different fitting materials on beginner violins, with parts like chin rests commonly being made of plastic.

Be sure to test out your violin before purchasing to determine if it has the right sound for you. Always inspect the setup of the instrument, checking for gaps between the pegs and nut, the set up of the fittings, and the angle of the neck. The violin needs an adjustment if you are unable to press each string down on the fingerboard near the bridge. You should always be able to move freely about the strings when playing your violin.

Once you have selected a violin and invested your hard-earned money in it, make sure you take good care of it. Always store your violin in a when not in use. Keep your violin out of extreme weather conditions such as very hot or cold temperatures or excessive humidity. In dry areas, you may need an instrument humidifier to prevent cracking. When storing your instrument and accessories in the case, make sure to put everything in the correct place to avoid damage when shutting the case. It is recommended that you change the strings every 6 to 12 months and rehair your bow every 6 to 18 months. Of course, these guidelines depend on how frequently you play your violin, so adjust accordingly.

If you're looking for rare acoustic musical instruments that are rare simply because so few people play them anymore, you really won't have to look very hard. How many harp players do you know? Or dulcimer soloists?

Purchasing one of these rare acoustic musical instruments will give you a conversation piece and a beautiful instrument to display, at the very least, but you could also learn to play one and probably be the only person on your block who can play a cittern or psaltery. You may be the only person who knows what they are, in fact.

If you're looking for those rare acoustic musical instruments that are vintage and hard to come by, you can also ask at music shops and music sellers online, but don't neglect antique stores, flea markets and yard sales, too. What a man holding a yard sale might call that “old box guitar” that he simply wants to get rid of after these years, could be a collector's item and one of the finest acoustic guitars every built—you won't know what's available until you look.

Another great place to find rare acoustic musical instruments that are vintage and collectible is in online auctions like eBay. When you start searching on eBay , it's a wise choice to have an idea what you're looking for. If you just search for “rare instruments” you'll get so many results you won't know where to start. Decide on the type of instrument you'd like to look for and search on it specifically without using the word “rare.” Several sellers will call their items rare, when they're not, just to get your attention.

When figuring out how to find rare acoustic musical instruments, you'll want to be sure that these rare instruments are in good condition, that they're playable with all their parts, and they haven't been damaged and repaired.

It also matters in which part of the guitar the wood is to be used. Also as with many things, the skill of the craftsman, the design of the guitar, and the woods own quality will make a difference in the overall sound and quality of the guitar.
In essence, you could use higher quality pieces of an overall lower quality wood, and produce a product superior to one that used low quality pieces of high quality wood.

The most often used high quality woods used for construction of guitars are as follows:

- Mahogany
- Koa
- Brazilian Rosewood
- Indian Rosewood
- Sitka Spruce
- Red Spruce
- Maple
- Basswood
- Ebony

Mahogany has a good density. When used for the soundboard it has a low sound velocity. However, when used as a side or bottom, its velocity is higher. The tone when used as a bridge or neck tends to be warmer.

Koa is similar to mahogany in that it has a good density, and is of a low velocity when used as a soundboard, while having a higher velocity as a side or back. However, it tends to emphasize the midrange tones more than mahogany.

Brazilian and Indian Rosewood share a lot of characteristics with each other. Their sound velocity tends to be high, their overtones having a broadness of range, a strong yet complex bottom end, and dark tone in the remaining range. Where they differ is that Brazilian tends to hold up better over the ranges, particularly being clear and bright in the bottom and top ends, whilst the Indian tends to be more of a midrange enhancer.

Sitka Spruce is the common and most used wood for soundboards. It is a very stiff wood, while being lightweight like softer woods. It has a high velocity sound, and is generally good for aggressively played guitar.

Red Spruce, on the other hand, is fairly heavy, has a high sound velocity, and is very stiff along the grain; more so than any other soundboard wood. Its tone is very full and clear at all levels of dynamics, making it an excellent soundboard for steel string acoustic guitars.

Basswood is very apropos in name, as while it is a light wood, it is very stiff, with great stability and low end response. Hence it is great for guitar necks and bass instruments.

Ebony was traditionally found used for the neck of instruments like the classical guitar, the violin, and high quality steel string guitars. Its sound velocity is the lowest among the commonly used woods. This is fine with guitars made with the better soundboard woods, but can be problematic with cheaper guitars using lesser soundboard woods thanks to its propensity to dampen sound.

Something else to keep in mind is the scarcity of some of these woods. Koa is grown only in Hawaii, and things like logging and grazing cattle have decimated their numbers, so they will be more costly to use.
