It is still the number one source for all types of violin information, even after all these years. The book is written by Swiss-born Alberto Bachmann, himself a concert violinist and composer. Bachmann also wrote 1906's Le Violon, 1913's Les Grands Violinistes du Passe, and 1914's Gymnastique a l’Usage des Violinistes prior to publishing this book in 1925.

The book covers a vast array of details and can fill out any music lover's library. You can find information on anything from history and origin of the violin to playing style to music theory. These and many other subjects are covered in a very comprehensive manner. Read all at once, it may be rather overwhelming with the information overload, but it is invaluable as a desk reference. This is a great book for anyone who plays the violin, instrument makers, and historians.

Anyone interested in any aspect of the violin will find it here, but for best results, compare with newer works. New research may further illuminate Bachmann's points. Of course, he may also rebuke modern authors who offer their 'certainties' without historical context. The Encyclopedia of the Violin is a very well-written, interesting, and often nostalgic look back at the history of the violin and its musicians. It is easily the largest collection of violin-related information in one place and contains photographs dating back to 1925. Through these rare photos, the reader can get an idea of what the instruments and bows looked like at the time.

The book also includes detailed accounts of how to assemble the instruments themselves. The instructions are easy enough to follow that anyone who is the slightest bit handy will be able to fashion their own violin from scratch. Yet another section is devoted to the discussion of violin playing techniques, such as advising the reader on how to play difficult passages from the violin literature section. You can also find a large list of violinists of the time, with the author's personal insight into each musician's playing style. There is biographical information listed for each of the violinists in the book. One of the greatest violinists ever, Eugene Ysaye, wrote the introduction, capping off this book as a compendium of world-class musicians. Some younger readers may not understand the significance of some of the material and concepts in the book, but they are an excellent historical reference point to compare with modern music theory and technique.

The Encyclopedia of the Violin is so massive and contains so much detailed information that it could easily have been split up into several volumes. The fact that it has not just makes it a more convenient reference. It may be too difficult to lug the book around in your backpack, but it is an excellent resource to have in your music library at home.

It does a great job of covering subjects like purchasing an acoustic guitar, getting ready to play, tweaking your instrument for the best tone and volume, selecting the proper thickness of string, and many more. Renowned guitarists like Steve Vai and Eric Clapton also give their own personal tips in this book, making the reader feel like they are receiving some inside information from the experts. This is the perfect book to take your acoustic guitar playing to a new level.

100 Tips for Acoustic Guitar is intended to be a guidebook for everything related to the acoustic guitar. It is split up into several exercises, with the difficulty level gradually increasing as you go along. Interspersed in these lessons are comments and insights from some of the top guitarists in the world. The book also comes with all of the exercises on an audio CD so you can actually hear what the song is supposed to sound like.

The author, David Mead, has performed on TV, radio, and live in several UK clubs. He became the editor of Guitarist magazine after a number of years as a private guitar teacher. He has also spent time working as the editor of Guitar Techniques magazine before beginning his solo writing career. He now serves as the director and course leader of the Bath International Guitar Festival and continues to write for Guitar Techniques and other guitar magazines.

In 100 Tips for Acoustic Guitar, Mead strips away all the useless information and gives you exactly what you need to know to begin playing the acoustic guitar. Experienced guitarists will also find something helpful in this book. Chances are, the 100 tips include a few things you have never thought of trying, no matter how long you have been playing. You will find topics that are not covered in other guitar books, possibly because they are very technical and complicated to explain. explains them in a useful and entertaining manner. The book also goes into areas like ear training that are very valuable and often missed in books.

The chapters of the book are set out in a logical order if you choose to work through the entire book front to back. They are also designed to be self-contained lessons so you can skip around however you please. There are a variety of musicians included in this book, so you will get great insights from a diverse array of sources. The writing style is humorous and conversational, with several anecdotes sprinkled in about Mead's former guitar students.

There are a few subjects that could have been included, but were not. For example, left hand technique is very important to playing acoustic guitar, but there are no tips on this topic in the book. Despite this omission, 100 Tips for Acoustic Guitar is still a solid informational resource for guitarists of any level.

The easy-to-understand written instructions are combined with examples that demonstrate each musical concept. Many of these samples are songs that are well-known by everyone, musician or non-musician alike, so they will sound familiar when the reader begins playing them. The book can be used by beginners looking to improve their cello skills by teachers of beginner students looking for a great teaching manual.

This book is split into four parts, to make it easy to find the help you need. Part One walks you through the process of shopping for a cello and finding a qualified teacher. It also gives you a glossary of musical terms and a summary of basic music theory concepts. This part is arranged as a step-by-step guide to explain scales, chord, fingerings, and how to properly use a bow. There are excerpts from approximately 60 songs included to demonstrate each of these concepts as the book progresses.

Parts Two and Three focus on reading music and playing by ear. The reader gets a basic introduction to concepts such as musical structure and theory. While Part Two is written for first position only, Part Three begins to introduce the ideas of accidentals, arpeggios, extensions, and minor scales. Cello positions two, three, and four are covered in Part Four, along with more advanced music theory principles. There is also a section on how to perform with other musicians. Despite this logical arrangement, each lesson is still designed so that it can be read and understood separately, depending on the reader's musical experience.

Cello Playing for Music Lovers is a unique blend of music theory concepts with popular culture references and a loose, conversational writing style. The book covers all of the important areas for beginner cellists, including posture, hand position, scales, notation, how to hold the bow, and basic cello maintenance, all with no musical experience on the reader's part.

Some of the songs included in the book are Shenandoah, Some Enchanted Evening, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, My Funny Valentine, and Hava Nagila. There are also classical excerpts such as Pomp and Circumstance, Bach's Arioso, and Tchaikovsky's Song Without Words. The book includes an audio CD with 97 songs to illustrate the concepts and lessons presented in the book. Each of these pieces are a familiar melody that can easily be adapted to the cello. The melodies very frequently use lower positions, open strings, or lack vibrato so they are not too difficult for beginner musicians.

The author does not claim to be a master cellist, so she is able to tell her own anecdotes and add a touch of personal experience to the book. The book lists a number of suggested songs for students to attempt to figure out by ear on their own. Designed for players of any level, the material in this book can be used on any kind of harp, whether it has pedals or not. It also is useful for whatever type of music you choose to play. Some subjects covered in the book include tuning, basic hand position, etudes, and harp solos. The sections of the book are organized logically, so that you can play each song in sequential order, beginning with the easier pieces and gradually increasing in difficulty level.

There are a number of illustrations to show you the proper hand positions, giving the reader a visual reference, as well as the written instructions. Each song is arranged in an easy to learn manner, allowing you to progress through the pieces and introducing you to more complex concepts slowly. There are plenty of fingering exercises to train your left hand and give you confidence to tackle the difficult arrangements.

Because hand and body position is so important when playing the harp, the book devotes several sections to topics related to this. You will learn the proper way to sit and hold your harp and where to place your hands. The book also covers maintenance of the harp and how to tune it. Music theory concepts such as scales, arpeggios, open and broken chords, and finger placement are extensively discussed. There is also a brief section that summarizes the basics of reading music. Along with all of these useful lessons to teach you how to play your harp, there are a number of Celtic harp songs includes as examples.

Unfortunately, the book does not come with an audio CD, so some of the lessons and fingerings may be a bit difficult to visualize. The addition of a CD would make this book an absolute must-buy for anyone interested in learning the harp. Some of the songs for the exercises only include a small portion, so you may not be able to put the song together in your head just from the excerpt. Even without the CD, this is a good starting point for new musicians and can still be a very effective resource.

Mel Bay's Basic Harp gets to the point quickly and cuts out a lot of the unnecessary fluff. Beginners can pick up this book and begin playing beautiful songs on the harp right away. Unlike some beginner's books that are overly complicated and difficult to understand, Riley is able to concisely explain each lesson in a way that musicians of all levels will be able to comprehend. The logical organization of the book makes it easy to skip around and learn only what you need to. While this is not usually an issue with a beginner's book, some people do pick up concepts faster than others and may wish to skip ahead instead of practicing the same exercises they already understand.

Al Petteway offers advanced guitar arrangements in this tome. As an award-winning composer and guitarist, Al Petteway has developed a unique style for guitar solos that mixes up numerous different influences including folk music and Celtic music, R&B music and blues. In this book, all of the tunes that come from his CD "Shades of Blue" are presented along with a number of Celtic songs which have all been transcribed with every single note included. The songs included in this book and CD combination include all of the following songs from Al Petteway's most recent CD release and a few extra Celtic songs for good measure:

- After Dark
- Alphonso Brown Is Back
- Darkest Hour
- E Funk
- Eureka Hotel
- Lightening Rod
- Meant to Be
- Requiem
- She Moved Through the Faire
- Slinky Soozie
- Smoky Mountain Morning
- St. Clair's Rag
- Spindrift
- Station to Station
- The West Wind
- Tony's Rag

In this book and CD combination, Al Petteway is performing and teaching a half dozen of his favorite compositions, incorporating all of his different influences including Celtic music, blues music, jazz music, R&B music and folk music just to name a few. In the special lessons section that he provides, Al Petteway is going to walk you through all of the different techniques and key aspects that are required for each of his arrangements. You can even select from numerous different camera angles to watch the full performance or to zoom in so that you can see a close up of either his right or left hand for a better view of his technique.

This is not the ideal instruction book for everyone looking to learn how to play the acoustic guitar, simply because Al Petteway's influences are interesting and unique. However, if you have an interest in Celtic music, folk music, blues music or music with an R&B influence, Al Petteway provides excellent instruction using music from his most recent CD. All of his music has been transcribed note by note, and you can follow along on the helpful CD/DVD to watch him play the music as you read along in the book. If you have an interest in this specific music style, then you will definitely enjoy what this book has to offer. As part of the Acoustic Master class series of book and CD/DVD combinations, this is an excellent addition to the library of anyone who has an interest in unique influences, Celtic music, or Al Petteway's unique acoustic guitar style.

Included are songs by Eric Clapton, Robert Johnson, James Taylor, the Indigo Girls, and many others. There are lesson sections on topics such as finger picking, strumming, tuning, and different musical styles. Rock, folk, country, blues, and bluegrass are among the styles you can learn by reading this book.

While it is not necessarily a beginner book, you do not need to know how to read music to use it. This allows people to learn the guitar without having to spend a lot of time studying music theory and scales. It also lets you learn at your own pace, skipping around whenever you feel like it. While it is designed for acoustic guitar players, the lessons and concepts can be applied to any style of guitar playing.

The subject matter may be a little bit difficult for people who have never played any instrument and are not familiar with music theory basics. At times, it is more of a song or sheet music book than a step-by-step instruction manual. The majority of the songs included are just a sample of a few measures from each song. The end of each chapter contains a full song you can learn to go along with the lesson.

In fairness to the author, the book is intended to be an addition to another guitar course, not a step-by-step guide for beginners. The cover states plainly "supplement to any guitar method" so there can be no confusion about the author's intent. The Hal Leonard Acoustic Guitar Method does assume you have some basic understanding of how to play the guitar, including strumming patterns, chord fingering, and scales. After a quick review of these basics, the book delves right into difficult chords and syncopated rythyms. One of the Hal Leonard basic acoustic guitar courses is a great complement to this guide.

The book includes approximately 45 songs or song excerpts to help illustrate the guitar concepts being taught in each chapter. Seeing real-world examples makes these concepts easier to learn and keeps practice interesting. The songs are written in tablature, so you do not even need to know how to read music. The book does not get into too many details in each lesson, focusing mainly on general concepts instead.

The quality of the tabs are excellent when compared to the most commonly available tablatures on the Internet. The Hal Leonard Acoustic Guitar Method includes the actual notes as the song was written, not some amateur musician's best guess. This book is worth the price just for the songs that are included, just understand that the book is not intended to be a standalone guide for beginners. Beginners can still benefit from the book, but they may have to come back and re-read certain songs later on in the musical education before the concepts will make complete sense. You may be wanting to put up your electric guitars for sale, after learning the acoustic methods in Hal's book.
