The banjo was originally developed and used by African Americans enslaved in the South. The slaves used gourd to create makeshift instruments that looked like the ones they used in Africa. In fact, the word "banjo" is believed to have evolved from a Kimbundu term for a similar musical instrument. African precursors to the banjo include the spike folk lute used by the Jola tribe of Senegambia and the Senegalese xalam of Senegal. The xalam has been found dating all the way back to ancient Egypt.

Modern banjos are available three main types:

Four-stringed, five-stringed, and a rarer six-stringed variety.

The six-stringed version looks almost like a guitar and is played in a similar manner. Banjo playing usually incorporates quick strumming and arpeggios on the fingerboard with the right hand. The current banjo was developed by American minstrels in the 1830s and were introduced to the British in the 1840s, becoming quite popular in English music halls.

Joel Walker Sweeney is thought to have developed the first five-string banjo in Virginia. An American minstrel performer from Appomattox Court House, Sweeney was looking for an instrument that would sound like the banjars he had seen the Southern Blacks play. He also had some new ideas he wanted to incorporate into his new musical instrument. He collaborated with a drum manufacturer in New York and decided upon replacing the banjar's skin-covered gourd with an open-backed drum, much like the current banjo variations. Sweeney also added another string, giving the instrument a broader range of tones.

These days, you think of bluegrass or country music when you think of banjos. Throughout history, the banjo was an integral part of African American culture and the minstrel shows in the 19th century. The banjo, along with the fiddle, gave African Americans an opportunity to influence the evolution of both types of music. In modern times, the banjo is becoming more popular in alternative music styles such as punk and pop rock.

There are various styles of banjos, depending on the type of music to be played. The five-stringed, open-back banjo is the standard instrument for American old-time music. There are a few different technique of banjo playing, including frailing and clawhammer. Frailing uses the thumb to catch the fifth string after each strum of the banjo or to pick out extra melody notes. This type of picking is also called drop-thumb picking because of how the thumb is used to pluck the strings. Banjo picks can also be used to make playing easier and the sound clearer.

Bluegrass music can be played in several styles, including Scruggs, Reno, or Keith. Bluegrass almost always requires a five-string banjo with a resonator. These styles all use a fingerpick and emphasize a continuous eighth note arpeggio. The Scruggs style was named after its originator, Earl Scruggs. Similarly, the Reno style is named after Don Reno and is mostly performed on a single string, with three fingers used for plucking.

The term banjo actually refers to a family of instruments rather than just a single instrument that fits into another family. The banjo instrument family makes use of a membrane made of hide or vellum that is used as a sound board. The first banjo instruments were brought to the United States from Africa by way of slaves during the 1700s, and this introduced not only the banjo to America but also the concept of banjo music as well.

The earliest banjo instruments often had bodies that were crafted from gourds. They nearly always utilized a neck that was without frets, and the number of strings on the banjo would vary greatly. As time went on, there were wooden as well as metal hoops that replaced the concept of the gourd banjo. The nails that once secured the animal hide in place would eventually be replaced by a screw mechanism that mechanically tightens the head over the hoop.

Some banjo instruments make use of an open back, while others have a resonator made of wood or metal that amplifies the sound that is being created by the instrument. Banjo necks tend to be both long and narrow, and while some have metal frets, there are also banjo instruments that do not have any frets at all. Strings made from metal or gut are responsible for fastening in a tailpipe, running across a bridge and continuing up over the instrument's body to slots in a raised wooden piece in the neck's top known as the nut. From this place on the instrument, the strings are all run individually to tuning pegs that are in the headstock of the instrument.

The original banjo was eventually replaced as a result of the four stringed banjo, and this had a great impact in comparison to the mandolin when it came to the instrument of choices among residents of the United States of America. The four stringed version of the banjo, when turned to the same four notes that the mandolin uses, which are E, A, D and G, and played using a plectrum, was actually quite easy for many mandolin players to adopt. Four stringed versions of the banjo are still in use today by minstrel music and many old time types of music as well. Four string banjo instruments do not typically have a closed wooden back or a resonator in the instrument.

There are now five stringed versions of the banjo, which are particularly common in folk music and bluegrass music, and they were first invented in the year 1833. On a banjo with five strings, four of the strings fun along the full length of the instrument while the fifth string only runs from the from the tailpiece all the way to a tuning peg that is only 2/3 along the way between the tailpiece and the instrument's headstock.

There are a number of elements to consider when buying a banjo. The main thing to look for is a banjo that is comfortable, easy to play, and does not hurt your hands. Push down on the strings up and down the neck to make sure they have enough give and do not cut your fingers. Pluck the strings with your strumming hand to test the amount of pressure needed to create a sound. You want to be able to strum lightly and still hear the note clearly.

Quality banjos for beginners can be found for about $100 to $150.

In this range, you will not have a great deal of options regarding the sound of the banjo, so look for quality more than anything else. The head, rim, and resonator of the banjo should appear solid and well-made. These lower-end banjos will usually include more metal than wood in the body and neck. If you are purchasing a banjo in this price range, your best bet is to shop at a reputable music store that can guarantee that you are getting a good instrument.

You can get a significantly better sounding banjo for only another $150-$200, so it may be worth going for the upgrade if you will be playing your banjo frequently.

This level of instrument should contain some wood parts and the metal may be of higher quality than the beginner banjos. You will start to find more stylistic features in this price range, along with some modifications that can affect the banjo's sound.

Most banjos are made overseas, with manufacturers in Korea or China. Deering is the only major banjo manufacturer in the United States offering lower-end pricing. The GoodTime product line has models beginning at about $300, or $400 for a banjo with a resonator. Gold Tone is an American company that uses Asian parts to produce quality banjos in this price range as well. Saga also manufactures their banjo parts in Asia for assembly in the United States.

Banjo kits are another way for hobbyists to get a great sounding banjo at a much lower price. Kits allow you to build your own instrument piece by piece. Most instrument kits have instructions intended to be followed even by novices, so they are generally easy to assemble. Some kits include the finishing materials to seal the wood when assembly is completed. If not, you will want to invest in a quality, hand-rubbed finish to protect your new banjo from heat and moisture.

Once you have found the right banjo, you may want to also purchase a carrying case, electronic tuner, or other accessories. For most musical styles, you will need a pick before you can begin playing. There are finger or thumb picks available in either metal or plastic. Banjo picks vary in thickness and size, depending on your hand strength, string thickness, and style of playing. Be sure to buy plenty of extra picks as they are small and very easy to lose.

Seth Lakeman, a folk music star that is nominated for a Mercury Prize has been talking about the acoustic of folk music and acoustic musical instruments. For example, Lily Allen's new single is featuring a banjo solo, which would not have happened in years past but now apparently seems to fit. He has been incredulous about things like this since he became a figurehead for the new folk music movement.

Allen's single is called "It's Not Fair", and it does actually include a banjo solo. There is no doubt about it at this point that this is because folk music has been enjoying quite a massive renaissance within the past decade, and one of the people sitting at the forefront of this massive musical renaissance is Seth Lakeman. His most recent album is known as Poor Man's Heaven, and it recently landed at number 8 in the chats, the pop charts, not the folk charts. He has put traditional folk music up there in the same ranks as some of the hottest pop stars in the industry, which is an extremely remarkable achievement if you consider what it takes to hit the top of the charts these days.

Lakeman says that getting his album to the top of the pop charts was definitely cool, but he attributes it to the fact that folk acoustic music is becoming more excited for the younger crowd. There are plenty of open mic spots in café bars and student unions where this kind of music is being played, meaning that it is finding its way pretty much everywhere. Lakeman isn't specifically saying that it is folk music that is seeing the renaissance at this moment so much as the acoustic aspect of the music. He believes that it is acoustic instruments and acoustic music that have attracted the attention of people for the moment, and people are jumping on the back of folk because folk and acoustic music sort of go hand in hand - But they are all part of the same thing.

Lakeman has definitely had success in this industry. He plays a number of different instruments including the fiddle, the banjo, the guitar, the mandolin and the viola, and he earned a nomination for a Mercury Prize based on his second solo album, which was released as Kitty Jay in the year 2005. His latest and greatest accolade is definitely much more amusing than it is music considering that he failed his A-level as a lad. However it seems that he is going to receive an honorary doctorate degree in music by Plymouth University.

There has been an incredible demand for the unique brand of music that Lakeman is offering, which is like a combination of folk and rock. He has not been playing the regular folk circuit but instead has been playing rock venues and topping pop charts.

When it comes to learning the banjo, there are some basic concepts that you need to keep in mind. For example, there is a very large difference between practicing and playing, and both are necessary to your success at learning the banjo. Practicing is about thinking, but playing does not require the same level of thinking. Playing is regarded as a relaxed maintenance where you are listening while playing. If you want to play, then everything you learned during practice needs to be under your fingers.

Practice has to do with the awareness of your fingering, what chord you are currently on, what timing you are playing in and numerous other elements that are absolutely necessary when it comes to preparing you for playing with others. Then you can take these elements and apply them when playing with others in a safe environment for playing which is constructive and not at all intimidating. Playing is best in workshops and slow jams if you are specifically seeking some healthy musical growth.

Another thing that is hinted at when you think about practice is repetition, which is not as necessary in playing. Everything comes down to repetition when it comes to practicing. Set some practice goals and stick to them. Goals are very important when it comes to practicing, which is especially meant to focus on honing and improving your skill rather than just exhibiting it. Create a general goal in your practice by creating a repertoire of songs that you want to complete. Practice this repertoire every single day until your goal is accomplished, and then focus on playing without any real structure.

When it comes to learning how to play the banjo, the process is simple: Practice basic chords and playing styles until you feel comfortable with the basics, then begin to add songs to your repertoire. Practice the songs through repetition and slowly but surely improve your playing style by addressing issues in your playing. When you have everything down, that is when you can focus on playing without intending to find and rectify flaws in your playing. For this reason, playing and practicing are two completely different beasts that need to be addressed separately. Know this, however: You need to both practice and play in order to get the most out of learning how to play the banjo.

It is important that you love your banjo. Make sure to pick your banjo up every single day, even if you only have a couple of minutes to play or practice before you have to stop. Make a daily contact with your acoustic instrument if you want to grow with it. Your banjo wants to create beautiful music for you, but you have to give it a chance, so give it a stand and designate a special place to practice. You should also have a calendar dedicated to your practice and what you want to accomplish so that you can make sure to get your practice in every day.

In the 1930's, Recording King was known for their quality banjos and guitars at reasonable prices. This was especially important at the time because the United States was stuck in the middle of the Great Depression. The instruments were included in the Montgomery Ward catalog and delivered right to people's homes.

Now, The Music Link is reintroducing the popular Recording King instruments as accurate reproductions of the models from the 1930s. Every detail is true to the original, all the way down to the parts used for the trim and hardware. Even the tone rings are a complete reissue of the 1934 specifications. The Recording King flange is thought to be the most faithful representation of the original Mastertone type flange on the market today. The newly reissued Recording King Artist Deluxe banjo has a one-piece maple neck, 20-hole tone ring, ornate gold-plated hardware, and beautiful floral engravings, giving it the feel of a prewar instrument.

The new Recording King Professional custom banjo was unveiled in Nashville at the annual World of Bluegrass festival. It includes a reshaped neck and resonator for a crisp, clear tone. With the antique finish and the painstaking aging of the wood, most of the people in attendance could not tell the difference between an authentic 1920s instrument and the Recording King banjo. This audience included many of the top experts in bluegrass and banjo music, so if they can't tell the difference, the reproduction must be spotless.

Recording King is also planning on issuing three new guitar series: Classic, Contemporary, and Historic. These guitars will all be made with solid tops and will most likely offer the option of solid-body construction for added rigidity and resonance. The acoustic guitars will include fully-scalloped x-shaped bracing from the prewar era. This type of bracing increases the available volume inside the guitar's body and adds fullness to the tone. The new guitar series will be the most authentic reproduction of the prewar models, just like the Recording King banjos.

The most difficult challenge for The Music Link in their new production of the Recording King line of musical instruments is the obtaining of quality woods at decent prices. This has become a major problem for all acoustic instrument manufacturers due to limited supplies and transportation costs. They have solved this issue by hiring an expert in manufacturing material exports and scheduling their supply deliveries far in advance. This allows Recording King to import quality woods such as Adirondack spruce, African mahogany, and Indian rosewood.

New banjos are being added to the Recording King product line almost every other month. As long as the customers keep showing interest in reproduced prewar musical instruments, they will continue expanding. Banjos are now being produced for the Asian markets of China and Japan. There are even two new custom retail shops that can provide specially-ordered instruments right there in person. One store is located in the United States and the other in Japan to capitalize on the emerging market for Recording King instruments.
