Wind instruments are actually known more technically as being aero phones. Wind instruments are capable of producing a sound when the column of air within them is set into motion or vibration by way of either a reed or the lips of the player. The tuning of these instruments is controlled by way of the length of the pipe. Wind instruments are found from all over the world, and they include whistles, bagpipes, flutes, didgeridoo, harmoniums and many other instruments as well. Here is a guide to some of the more common and more interesting wind instruments.

Accordions and Concertinas

Accordions are musical instruments that are capable of producing sound when air is forced through the bellows of the instrument. Accordions are also commonly referred to as squeezeboxes. Accordions make use of buttons and keys in order to produce different specific notes. There are also piano accordions that have keyboards which resemble small pianos. The concertina is a similar but unique musical instrument capable of producing similar sounds, but each button only produces a single note rather than several.

Bagpipes

Bagpipes are another instrument that is classified as being an aerophone. The bagpipes are reed instruments making use of an air reservoir. This air reservoir allows for an uninterrupted air stream to be directed through the reeds of the instrument. These reservoir aerophones are neither limited to Scotland nor Ireland, as their antiquity is actually capable of being traced all throughout North Africa, Asia and Europe.

There are a number of different types of bagpipes that fall into this category of instruments including the medieval bagpipes, Mediterranean bagpipes, traditional bagpipes, chalice bagpipes and the chanter, which is a related item.

The tradition behind making musical instruments such as these is one that is handed down from one generation to the next, and this results in the high-quality production of a number of different specific types of instruments all throughout the world. Bagpipes are often made out of rosewood and metal, making them sturdy and tolerant to changes in the weather and humidity.

Bloul

The Bloul is also regarded as the Armenian Flute like the Duduk, and it is an instrument of unwavering Armenian origin. This instrument was developed by Armenian and Kurdish shepherds in Western Armenia. The player will hold the bloul out at an angle while they blow into half of the mouthpiece, and the result is a sound that is haunting and wind like in nature. This is not a very common instrument in the United States, and you may not find it in a typical orchestra, but it is a unique worldly instrument all the same and is capable of producing some truly melodic sounds.

The accordion is a potable acoustical musical instrument that is box shaped, and is derived from the hand held bellows-driven family of free-reed aerophone instruments. The accordion is sometimes referred to as a squeezebox. A person who plays this particular instrument is known as an accordionist. The accordion is played by compressing or expanding the bellows while pressing keys or buttons which causes valves known as pallets to open, allowing for air to flow across brass strips known as reeds. These reeds vibrate in such a way that it allows sound to be produced from inside the body. The accordion instrument is often known to be a one man band because no single accompanying instrument is needed for an accordionist to play an entire song. The performer is usually responsible for playing the melody of the song using the buttons or the keys on the right hand, and the accompaniment of the song is played through the use of pre set and bass chord buttons on the left hand.

The accordion is an instrument that is often used in folk music, especially in South America, Russia, North America and in Europe. The accordion is commonly associated with busking, and it is also popularly included in many popular musical acts. The accordion also often finds it way into classical music performances including both solo and orchestral performances.

The oldest name that is used for this particular group of instruments is Harmonika, which comes as a mixture of the words "aer" and "monos", Greek words for air and unit, and "Cassa" meaning box. Native versions of the accordion name are used more often today, which are references to the type of accordion that was patented by Cyrill Demian as an accordion that automatically coupled chords on the bass side of the instrument.

Accordions are crafted in a large number of different types, styles and configurations. There is no single standard accordion. For this reason, things that may be possible to do with one type of accordion may not be possible at all to achieve with another. Some accordions, for example, are bisonoric which means that they are capable of producing different pitches depending on what direction the bellows are moving in. Other accordion instruments are unisonoric which means that they produce the same pitch no matter which way the bellows are moving in. Some accordions make use of a chromatic button board for the right hand manual, while others make use of a diatonic button board for the right hand manual.

Some accordions are capable of playing in different registers than others, and some use piano style musical keyboards for the right hand manual. Additionally, different accordion craftsmen and technicians can tune similar registers in slightly different manners, personalizing the end result to best suit their needs. The boundaries of what can define an accordion are quite broad. The accordion is an interesting and versatile instrument that can be utilized in many genres of music from orchestral solos to rock music.

The accordion is closely related to another instrument, the concertina. Both of these instruments are essentially glorified mouth organs that utilize reeds that are generally made out of tempered steel. These tempered steel reeds are set in vibration using a rectangular shaped bellows.

The bellows are operated using the left hand. Just like with all keyboard instruments, the left hand is also responsible for manipulating the bass keyword. In this instance, the bass keyboard is a collection of different buttons rather than actual proper keys. These buttons are designed to produce not only single notes but also pre-ordained chords as well. The right hand is responsible for operating a treble keyboard which is meant to be based off of the conventional style piano keyboard, which is why many people refer to the accordion keyboard as a piano accordion.

This instrument is suspended through the use of shoulder straps, which allow the hands to be freed up for the purpose of playing the keys, pressing the buttons and maneuverability. An accordion without a shoulder strap is difficult to hold while playing, making the shoulder strap a necessary accessory when playing with this instrument.

History of Development of the Accordion

Although the accordion is purported to have been invented by a Berlin resident named Christoph Ludwig Buschmann in 1821, and then further developed in Vienna by Cyrillus Demian in 1829, it was not until it reached Belgium that it managed to achieve its first marketing on a widespread marketing, which was furthered even more when the accordion reached France. The accordion is still identified most frequently with the popular music from these two countries. This is particularly true when it comes to France, where it still ranks to this day just below berets and the louche moustache in terms of national stereotyping for the country.

Despite the fact that the accordion musical instrument is regularly associated with trendy and popular music, the accordion has often found its way into numerous concert hall compositions, as well, especially by a number of the more notable composers including Berg, Matyas Selber, Prokofiev, Paul Creston, Virgil Thomson, Roy Harris and numerous other musical composers as well. In Trossingen, Germany in 1931, a music school was established exclusively for teachers of the accordion, and it became a fully fledged academy in the state by 1948. This is not the only accordion school in existence, however, as there is a constantly renewing interest in this unique instrument.

The British College of Accordionists has been flourishing ever since its inception which was in 1936. The American Accordionists Association has been flourishing since its inception which was in 1938. For this reason, there is a lot of great interest in the accordion and many teachers throughout the globe that are willing to share its instruction. In one form or another, you can find accordions all throughout societies located all around the world.
