Buying Acoustic Guitars
March 3rd, 2010 | Acoustic Musical Instruments, Buyer's Guide, Guitars
If you are in the market to buy a brand new acoustic guitar, the one of the biggest factors that you should take into consideration during the decision making process is the tonewood. The individuals that make guitars believe that the wood that is chosen for the top of the guitar is one of the most important factors used in determining the tone quality for the instrument in question. Different woods each offer a completely different sound velocity, which is the speed at which the material can transmit the energy that it receives.
Brushing up on the various types of tone woods that are available is a really good idea when you have decided to buy an acoustic guitar so that you can understand what your options are. Here are just a few of the different types of wood that can be used as the tone wood, the wood responsible for transmitting the energy that creates the sound of beautiful music. The more that you know about the types of tone wood that are out there, the better equipped you will be for choosing the right guitar.
Mahogany, when it is used for the top of the guitar, offers a low sound velocity, which produces a solid sounding tone. Mahogany tone woods offer a strong and punchy sort of tone that is especially useful for country blues music.
Koa is commonly used for soundboards, offering a low velocity of sound with a solid tone. This sound tends to respond best along the dynamic range's upper end, especially with Hawaiian style playing and laying rhythm.
Brazilian Rosewood is a type of wood that is especially known for its high velocity of sound as well as its broad range of different overtones. Brazilian rosewood offers excellent clarity both on the bottom and on the top ends of the dynamic range.
Indian Rosewood, just like Brazilian rosewood, is also known for producing a high velocity of sound as well as a broad range of different overtones. Indian Rosewood, on the other hand, offers a much thicker and more midrange coloration overall. When used for the neck of the acoustic guitar, Indian Rosewood is capable of fattening up the midrange considerably.
Acoustic guitars are definitely an excellent way for you to express yourself with music. It is important when you go about buying an acoustic guitar, regardless of whether you are buying a new guitar or a used one, that you understand the differences between each type of tone wood so that you can get the right guitar for your own personal needs. The more that you learn about the different types of tone wood that are out there, the better capable you will be of choosing the proper acoustic guitar in order to create the desired sound.
