There are a number of different types of guitars, which produce a variety of different sounds, and offer a myriad of different features. One of the most demanding types of guitars out there is the acoustic bass guitar. This is a bass instrument that offers a hollow wooden body which is similar to a regular bass guitar, though it is traditionally somewhat larger than your standard steel string acoustic guitar. Steel strung acoustic bass guitars are louder, and they offer sounds that are brighter than traditional or classical guitars. These guitars tend to be constructed using a wide variety of different materials. The more expensive varieties of these instruments have a solid top along with solid backs and sides. Normally the materials of choice are spruce and cedar, especially for the solid wood tops of the bass guitars. The back and sides are more commonly made from rosewood, maple or mahogany.
Entry level acoustic bass guitars are most commonly constructed from laminated wood. Mid range acoustic bass guitars, on the other hand, are sometimes comprised of a combination of solid parts like solid top, and also laminated woods. Acoustic bass guitars are more preferably used in instances where a country song or folk music is being played, though there are pop and rock singers who also make use of acoustic bass guitars in their musical stylings.
The first modern acoustic bass guitar was originally developed in the early half of the 1960s by Ernie Ball in San Luis Obispo, in California. He was looking to provide bass guitarists with an instrument that had more of an acoustic sound and that would better match with the sound that acoustic guitars provided. In the late 1980s, MTV created a show called Unplugged that helped to popularize the hollow bodied acoustic bass guitars which were amplified with pickups.
The acoustic bass guitar most commonly has a hollow wooden body that is similar to the steel string acoustic guitar. This is quite unlike the electric bass, which is generally an instrument with a solid body. The majority of all acoustic bass guitars are fretted instruments, though there are also semi fretted instruments in existence that are quite rare. Frets are raised metal strips that are inserted along the fingerboard, extending across the entire length of the neck of the guitar. On a fretted bass, the frets divide the fingerboard into semitone divisions. The most common acoustic bass guitar has four strings, and these four strings are commonly tuned to E, A, D and G, an octave below the lowest four strings that a normal six string guitar is tuned to. Most acoustic bass guitars have pickups, which are either magnetic, piezoelectric or both, allowing them to be amplified with an instrument amplifier. This is because hearing an acoustic bass guitar is difficult without the assistance of an amplifier.
