Here are some things that you should absolutely know and keep in mind when it comes to significantly improving your acoustic guitar playing skills.
1 - Tuning.
You have to be extremely careful to make sure that your acoustic guitar is remaining tuned the right way. If your guitar becomes out of tune at any point, others will be able to easily identify it. There are electronic tuners that make this process a great deal easier, so pick one up if you are not sure about the tuning of your guitar.
2 -Replace Strings.
When your guitar is not regularly staying in tune, or when you are playing up the neck, new strings are often needed. If the guitar is out of tune once you get the new strings installed, it would be wise to have the intonation for each of the strings adjusted to make them perform better.
3 -Shoulds and Should Nots.
You need to give as much attention as you possibly can not only to what you should do, but also to what you should not do when it comes to taking good care of your guitar and improving your guitar playing overall.
4 -Don't Overplay Notes.
You need to make absolute sure that you are not over playing the notes. Your audience is always going to hear the one sound that you weren't meant to play if you make a mistake. If you make unnecessary sounds, it will actually keep you from improving your guitar playing and will indicate to your audience that you are still a beginner.
5 -Be Sober.
Never drink alcohol when you are playing the acoustic guitar for obvious reasons. The effects of alcohol will hinder your performance, harm your sound and will more than likely make you look stupid as well. Some people think they perform well when they're under the influence of alcohol, but the truth is, no one ever succeeds when they're drinking.
6 -Study.
Plan and study everything that you are intending to play. If you understand the context to play it will improve your performance. You want to be able to identify the key and chord rather than just knowing which to play. You also need to understand the role behind each key and chord in order to improve your playing.
7 - Always play within your ability.
Everyone has different and unique styles and talents when it comes to playing music. Don't try to play like someone who is better, but instead play within your capabilities.
8 - Try to allow for the song to rule over the play.
Some guitarists feel like they are indispensable, and they try too hard to overdue everything. If you play too hard, the sound of your guitar will be projected over the actual song, affecting the show in a potentially negative way.
Employ these eight basic concepts and you will improve your acoustic guitar playing skill.
